help with interstellar design? (for a story)
Ambulatory Cortex replied to toric5's topic in Science & Spaceflight
For a thruster, how about a dusty-plasma fission-fragment rocket? Per ProjectRHO, it has 15 million ISP, 344N thrust, and weighs 9 tonnes. It'd use a brachistochrone instead of hohmann trajectory. When talking multi-year journeys, it's pretty hard to beat. -
[1.1.2] Realism Overhaul v11.0.0 May 8
Ambulatory Cortex replied to Felger's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
The MPDT thruster from Near Future Technologies appears to be borked. Gave it a liquid hydrogen tank full of fuel, and it still thinks it had no fuel. RO installed with CKAN. https://www.dropbox.com/s/g752ottxsaz3sdw/MDPT%20failure.png?dl=0 -
Mod bundler for "Real Solar System" (DEFUNCT)
Ambulatory Cortex replied to jamis's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I can definitely see how this would be difficult to maintain. The difficulty of getting everything installed and configured is why I use it in the first place! -
Time to Mars, rather shocking
Ambulatory Cortex replied to KASASpace's topic in Science & Spaceflight
So they actually built one that works? How did I not know this? *mumbles something about being out of the loop* -
Time to Mars, rather shocking
Ambulatory Cortex replied to KASASpace's topic in Science & Spaceflight
You've somehow completely missed the point. If a spaceflight organization wanted a NTR, they could get one. They'd just need to build it or have someone else do so. But you can't build a fusion rocket, because they haven't been invented yet. -
Taylor Wilson and NERVA; check out his TED talk.
Ambulatory Cortex replied to Dispatcher's topic in Science & Spaceflight
You could perhaps use a solid neutron poison that melts at a dangerous temperature and mixes with the fuel as a failsafe. Alternately, have more than one engine, and eject the malfunctioning one. -

Great! So where can I buy a fusion engine? -
Or you could increase the partial pressure of oxygen to compensate for the lower total pressure. This is an artificial environment, after all.

Here I was, all set to scold you for not using search, ready to screenshot the search page. So I searched. And it wasn't on the first page. Or the next page. Or the one after that... It was on the 6th page. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/28428-Orion-aka-Ol-Boom-boom?highlight=orion Enjoy.

Ambulatory Cortex replied to taniwha's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
You can scan at a higher timewarp. -
PorkWorks dev thread [Habitat Pack] [SpaceplanePlus]
Ambulatory Cortex replied to Porkjet's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
Looking forward to using these. I assume the round tanks with no cage will have absolutely minimal structural mass? -
[0.23.5] TweakableGimbal (V0.2.1 release: Jan 18, 2014)
Ambulatory Cortex replied to HoneyFox's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Does reverse control make puller-configuration engines gimbal properly? -
[1.12] Extraplanetary Launchpads v6.99.3
Ambulatory Cortex replied to taniwha's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
What do you mean by this? -
Na, the spaceport download was updated this month. This thing is still being maintained.
-
This thing doesn't even include a plugin, so it'd have to be a mechjeb bug, would it not?

What's better by speed and damage, An X-Wing or Capital Ships
Ambulatory Cortex replied to ThatKerbal's topic in The Lounge
I dunno, is a 20 tonne horsefly more dangerous than an evil unicorn? Because they both have about as much basis in reality. -
KSP1 Computer Building/Buying Megathread
Ambulatory Cortex replied to Leonov's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I have discarded the VSK-4000 in favor of the Antec Sonata Proto. It appears to offer everything I want. Front door which covers power button(lockable), front usb and audio, and no top vent. Side panel is also lockable, but that doesn't matter much to me. -

It looks like the Antec Sonata Proto might be the case I should get. Am I likely to have any issues fitting everything into it? -

How does the Antec VSK-4000 look for a case? I'm trying to figure out if it can slot two 120mm fans in the front, as well. Edit: One of the reviews says it has room for two 120mm fans in front. -

I understand. The K version is an overclockable stripped-down version of the standard. I probably don't need VT-d It hasn't happened before. Perhaps I'm just paranoid. Since I'm probably just paranoid, should I have any qualms about getting this case? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146139 Normally I don't like refurb stuff, but the moving parts of a case are pretty cheap if something fails. Aaand out of stock. Guess I should have snapped that up when I saw it. -
KSP1 Computer Building/Buying Megathread
Ambulatory Cortex replied to Leonov's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I do minor hobby dev work occasionally. Most games I play have poor multithread performance. This is why I chose a Haswell processor instead of an Ivy. While the Ivy had better multithreaded performance for the same price, the Haswell i5 had better single thread performance. It's sounding like I should go with the K though, as I'm not likely to use the stripped features of the standard 4670. I'm still looking for a case. I need one with a front door, because I have small children who like to push buttons, and no top vent, because the spectre of children spilling things into my case terrifies me.
