  1. Had a great time with friends last night untill our server crashed. Apparently four people all trying to launch and deal with exploding debris at the same time caused the server to get a headache. That said it worked surprisingly well and i was able to dock with items that two separate people had only moments before put into LKO. To be honest it ran pretty smooth for an Alpha release. One issue though, while things where going on we had someone monitor the server and it was apparently getting a half dozen vehicle destroyed warnings at any one time. We assume it's from debris falling in and out of Physics range while in atmo and getting reguraded as destroyed. We got several reports of that nature right before the inevitable crash of our server. I wasn't the Administrator of the server so i have no crash reports or anything of that nature to share. Word to the wise though, build clean rockets that don't explode at every stage
  2. the steam controller is likely to be a huge flop in my rough estimate for a couple of very important reasons. Reason one, the design: Basically what we have here is two touchpads in range of the thumb with your standard four buttons.. except those buttons are in the center framing what looks to be a touch screen. link here so you can have a reference: http://media.steampowered.com/steam/store/livingroom/controller/SteamController.jpg now while this looks like a neat controller i can see a couple of complaints stemming from the fact that in order to reach all of the buttons you'll either have to use both thumbs, deciding when is best to remove your thumb from the pad you've bound your movement too and when it's ok to remove your thumb from the pad you have your camera movement bound too, or worse dedicating one thumb to reach all the buttons causing the occasional hit of the touch screen which will likely bring up the steam ingame interface. Apart from that the simple closeness of those buttons to the touch pads is likely to cause unfortunate accidents in which those buttons are pressed, Not good for KSP. Imagine if you will a launch scenario where you have your pitch and yaw bound to one pad and your roll/throttle to another, because why not, and your stage key bound not to the obvious middle space button but instead to the Y or B keys. You reach the point of the launch where you need to start your gravity turn but the craft is being a little skewed compared to your normal assent and you now find yourself needing to raise your pitch and yaw drastically to try and recover when suddenly your fingernail catches on the Y key and stages the rocket, or alternately you've just gotten to a point where you can open the throttle and have perhaps decided to roll for a more cinematic shot and yet again your finger goes just over enough to catch the b key and now you're out of control with whatever throttle you had set. back to my main point though the second reason i think the controller will be a flop is that currently most games on steam where a controller can be used already supports a number of other gamepads which gamers have come to have their own preferences, Either with the Xbox or Dual shock style layouts. Personally I have a ps3 controller that i've gotten a program for that lets me use it as a PC controller as well as a Logitech controller with the same layout and then a saitech Joystiq. Now i've used all three of these for flights in ksp and i've got to say nothing quite beats the control of the Keyboard/Joystick combo.
  3. This thread is for your "true to life" and "campfire" stories about everyone's favorite kerbonaut Jebediah Kerman. A chronicle if you will of his brave exploits that have brought many a space program back from the brink of disasters. Feel free to share tales of when no other pilot would do. When disasters struck dooming the mission and only one kerbal could get the crew back alive! Or tales of when our humble hero took it upon himself to go where no other kerbal was able and made it home. the only rule with this is to have fun but only include missions where Jebediah was directly involved and came back alive. My personal Jeb story comes from my first mission in KSP. I haven't been a player of KSP for as long as some of the old hats who remember flying without asas, or even a docking port.. but that didn't stop me from designing the perfect station core. It had everything a kerbal could ask for crew storage, command pod, RCS, you know the likes but there was indeed one problem that was not foreseen at the drawing board, the utter lack of docking ports on the six way adapter. It was quite the embarrassment and some time was taken to debate if the mission should be scrapped or not. Fortunately someone noticed that on the opposite side of the craft was a small clampotron Jr. docking port that had been left on in a previous design phase. A plan was quickly hatched to approach the station with a new six way adapter that had fully useable docking ports. Upon Rendezvous to the station with the new replacement node another dire mistake was noticed, the ship carrying the replacement part had previously jettisoned it's ASAS unit which was in a previous stage. At this time no one in mission control thought it would be possible for a single kerbal to take a severely unbalanced craft and maneuver it in for a docking without any computer automation. That was until Jebediah took the middle seat, He had just returned in the capsule after having gone out to see if there was any way to rejoin the defunct asas unit to the courier ship and had a plan. Since repairs would be impossible because of the bad planning he knew that only he'd only get one shot to achieve docking in a tumbling ship. With only a shimmer of hope that this mission would be successful he carefully edged in, at first trying to use RCS to keep the port in line with it's tiny counter part. Bob meanwhile gave a live readout of monopropellant levels, and as he frantically reminded jeb that they where down to their last few liters the idea hit him. He'd only fire short bursts for translation, disable RCS and rotate with the internal gyros of his three man pod. The bold ploy worked leaving mission control cheering and enough propellant to safely depart the station and bring home Bill Bob and the hero Jeb. (ps. sorry for any grammatical mistakes i left. Came up with the idea only a few minutes before passing out at my desk. But please do share your own!)
  4. Bob: Allright Asas we did this manuver 100 times in simulation before breakfast, are you ready to do it for real? Asas: SPAAAAAAACE Bob: ... I'll take that as a yes, ok now on the count of three Asas: LETS GO!! I'M GONNA BE IN SPACE... SPACE... SPAAACE! Bob: .... Mission control we are going to have to abort, the Asas just tore off our second stage booster Asas: NOOOOO SPAAAACE T_T
  5. could i possibly get an RAF themed flag (ww1 and 2 era) possibly useing a kerbals eva helmet instead of a target?
  6. I'll give you a hint, it's all stock parts to bad it's only capable of level flight.... Now i just need a suitably epic flag to put on it. ps. tell me if you want me to share the craft file
  7. I've used that technique before with struts but i think this would negate the point of useing the i beam part since i'm trying to build a solid chassis. a rover design i posted before whatever happened to the previous forum had a solution where i just strutted everything with copious amounts of space tape but that craft has proven to occasionally be more floppy then a limp noodle, while other times is solid as a rock
  8. Has anyone else had problems when trying to use the I-beam part to construct a frame for say orbital construction, or their mun base? I've had some limited success buy strutting a not rockomax 6 way part at the end of each I-beam to the main core but also have found that attaching anything to the side of those beams even when the weight is balanced causes them to twist and contort in sometimes unpredictable ways. I've been trying to construct a ship with a fairly large superstructure useing these beams as the backbone but even then it just seems that at the joint between two of them that they're more then happy to twist up to a full 180 degrees.. Thoughts?
