Tier 1 runway definitely needs to be changed. The situation when the runway is the most bumpy place on the planet is ridiculous.

I just drive onto the perfectly flat grass to the side and launch anything I like, you don't run out of runway that way either so you can launch lower TWR craft easier.

As you say, that should not be the case.

I think the difference should not be bumpiness, the change should be the length and the width, it is more appropriate. Tier 0, short and thin. Tier 3, fat and long.

Of course it is not the absolute least amount of coding that can be done so even though it is a better solution, Squad will likely not do it.

The runaway are not flat by choice.

A runway that extended all the way around the planet would be a circle. You either have the ends raised because the runway is flat but placed on a sphere meaning you roll towards the middle or you have it follow the curve of the planet, so it is not flat, but you do not roll.

I`d rather not have a runway that requires brakes or I roll along it. A perfectly flat runway is a bad idea. Unless you define `flat` as `equidistant from the equator` in which case flat is good.

Am writing the detailed instructions and testing in redmine, there will be a "Needs Clarification" status (or similar) and will have detailed instructions when its time to go :)

We wanted to share the plans, before we started making changes

When it is time please make some form of announcement (like this one) on the front page, maybe the devnotes as well, I`d hate to miss this.

  4. +1 to squad for doing this and also the particular people in squad actually managing and dealing with this not small task, and of course thanks to all of you on the forum who will be working for free for the love of the game, it`s been a long time coming and the game can only benefit from a good hard look at the bugs.

I`ll try to do my bit.

    It's not that easy. ;)

I'm actually using the sharing in-house. There are three huge limitations:

    1. You can not play shared games in offline mode.

    2. You can not play shared games from an account as long as the real owner is playing one of his games.

    3. Shared accounts need steamgard protection.

Basically you have to be online and the guy lending the game can't play any steam game as long as you access shared software. So it's not like you just copy games onto another account or anything. Also can't do it with strangers, because you need to do additional steamguard verification for every pc, which would be a huge security risk doing it outside of a very close circle of family or friends.

    That makes it more understandable.

So there is nothing stopping me from getting my friend to come over, verify I am someone he wants to share his library with and when he is not playing a game on steam (he only rarely plays), I could bugtest 1.1 and help bugtest.

So out of curiosity how would the `must be online` bit work for a game like KSP which does not check that when you run the executable directly?

Hmm, I had honestly never heard of Steam Family Sharing, but I will point out that once you buy a game through Steam, you're also subject to their terms. Do take a close look at that :)

Steam say that up to ten people can share your entire game library through the scheme. Only some games that require a key or similar are excluded.

It seems to be one of those things where if you are not opted out, you are opted in. If Squad don`t want to be part of the scheme maybe they should think about it a bit...

EDIT : It seems that the people who share your library get their own copy of the game and have their own saves etc so they pretty much have their own copy to play without ever purchasing it.

Redistributing any build of Kerbal Space Program is a breach of the EULA and cannot be condoned. Anyone who arranges downloads or offers download links will be banned from the forums and may have their KSP license revoked for breaching the EULA conditions.

    P.S. don't hate on Joe, he's a nice guy, really! ;)

Absolutely. Joe is a very nice guy ;) It is also very clear in the EULA that you cannot offer a copy to anyone, commercialise KSP or distribute it in any way.

In no way am I trying to go against the EULA or infringe copyright or encourage others to do so. I would like that clear right now.

I am interested in a specific case though, using Steam, my friend could legally share their library with me using (steam family sharing) and I could then, legally, have KSP (the application) in a folder on my computer. The EULA gives me as a license holder the right to copy `the application` (including updates) for my own use if it was legally obtained. Even without that I could also just play that copy under steam family sharing as is.

I don`t see where any infringement of copyright happens. The copy was obtained legally, was put on my computer legally and then I copied it myself under the rights given to me under the EULA to play for my enjoyment. The term copyright simply means the right to copy, something the EULA explicitly gives a license holder as long as it is a single copy purely for personal use and was obtained legally. The EULA does not prohibit such action, in fact it expressly gives me that right.

    Am I missing something?

If someone could point out where in the situation I describe the illegality happens I`d be appreciative.

Is KSP excluded from steam family sharing? I know some applications are.

If that is the case then it`s all moot and I would never consider doing it.

again, It is very clear in the EULA that you cannot offer a copy to anyone, commercialise KSP or distribute it in any way. Such action will and should be frowned upon with the deepest of frowns...

In no way am I trying to go against the EULA or infringe copyright or encourage others to do so. I would like that clear right now, again.

That's why the stable is considered the 'up to date version', even though there is a half broken pre-release beta that is technically newer. ;)

The EULA grants you the right to make a copy of the application and play it, including updates and patches. It does not mention stable, up to date, beta, release or anything else like that. 1.1 is an update, you have the right to play it once it can be legally obtained.

  9. Alright people calm down. Nobody is suggesting for anyone to jump on their favourite piracy site and download illegal copies of the game or to do anything against the EULA.

I was hoping for a word explaining the details of the EULA as it pertains to my question. I can see a shizzlestorm approaching so I`ve looked at the EULA (the document I am legally obliged to comply with) and nowhere does it specifically say a method or place for downloading the software that I have a license to use. All it is saying is that I must have a license, I must be the only person playing using my license and I must play on one machine that I own. I also must not try to make money from it, for example by opening an internet cafe and selling time playing KSP or selling copies of the game. I also must not distribute copies illegally, for example to people who do not have a license although I am granted the right to copy the game for my own use. As to exactly how I obtain a copy of the game to play using my license, that is not explicitly defined but it must be a legal method so no buying a bootleg copy from dodgy dave round the corner.

Currently under the EULA I am allowed to copy and play the game, purely for entertainment, on a single machine that I own, without making money, as long as I make the copy myself so no third party (for example my friend) is giving a copy to me. DEPORTED will remain the owners of the software and I would be copying and using the software under the terms of the license agreed between myself and DEPORTED under the EULA.

Specifically "DEPORTED grants you, and you accept, the non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, non-commercial, limited right and license, during the term, to copy, install, access and use one copy of the Licensed Application solely and exclusively for your personal use on any computer running a validly licensed copy of the operating system for which the Licensed Application was designed" "This Agreement shall also apply to any patches or updates you may obtain for the Licensed Application."

I`m not advocating copyright infringement or uses outside of the agreement in the EULA, the opposite in fact. I have rights under the EULA that I wish to exert. As a license holder I have the right to copy the application and any updates for my personal use, something I suspected previously but I am now sure of having read the entire EULA.

If anyone sees in the EULA a place where it specifies that I must obtain a copy from steam or the store or GoG as opposed to making my own copy (technically and legally exactly the same though) I will of course not.

    EDIT :

Having bought the game does not ENTITLE you to anything besides playing the most up-to-date version of the game as soon as it is realeased.

You have not bought the game. You have bought a license to use the application. That includes, for example, the new wiki. This means you could download the wiki to your personal computer to use offline.

"The product that is subject to this license is referred to as the “Licensed Application” which may include associated software components, media, printed materials, and “online” or electronic documentation."

If your friend were "caught" distributing the game to anyone they would be charged with piracy, if I'm not mistaken.

While there is a 0.0001% chance either of you would be charged, I don't think it's really worth it.

I know it's not morally or logically piracy but the law doesn't usually care about that.

maybe years ago when what you bought was a physical copy of a game. These days you buy a license to use software you do not own. I have said license.

There is one more thing, there is something that matters more than what the authorities think regarding the issue of piracy.

    What Squad thinks.

They are the holders of the copyright. It does not matter how many law enforcers wish to prosecute someone for copyright infringement, if the holder of the copyright says it is OK then it is.

One of the things I'm most looking forward to is multi-threaded physics.  I did a brief search, but not sure if this is changing: does this mean we'll have more than 4x time warp for burns?  No more wandering off for 20 minutes while my pitiful yet efficient ion thrusters do their work....

As for the controversy over delivery, here's Beethoven's "Rage Over a Lost Penny"

Enjoying the rage over a lost penny, very apt.

I don`t know how you feel about mods but for your ion thrusters have you considered persistentthrust?

It allows thrust to continue during rails warp. Specifically designed to remove the headache of ION thrusters...

  12. I don`t understand the fuss. Sure we all want the game as soon as possible but there is a release date planned, experimentals have to happen and then there is something a few of us have said would be a good thing to catch the bugs that are not caught in QA and experimentals, that being a more open experimentals stage. Thank you Squad for testing out a new phase in development.

The issue of it only being on steam is pure logistics and bandwidth, again nothing that can be fixed by being mad at it...

  13. Would love to test but I bought in the store and while I did buy early enough I do not want steam more than I do want to test 1.1 early.

I`m more of a mod type guy anyway so if the mod makers get a chance to update their mods before actual release that suits me fine.
