Should KSP have a Delta-V readout?

Oh absolutely. Doesn't mean it wouldn't be nice to have in stock though. -
Should KSP have a Delta-V readout?
KSK replied to bsalis's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I can see the arguments either way for a delta-V readout in-flight (or in the VAB for that matter). Personally I'm not too fussed - when I'm designing a ship I find it quite fun to break out the pen and paper occasionally and work out it out myself when I need to (and then add a safety margin onto the actual design ) but fully appreciate that that particular 'fun' may not apply to everyone. Apoapsis / periapsis readouts whilst in flight mode would be golden though. I'd love to be able to fly a ship right up to a (fairly) reliable orbit, without having to use the Map screen. -
Nothing sub-par about this sub-forum! Plus this thread has been added to the Fan Works library to record it for posterity. Some of these lyrics were too good not to keep.

Done - and good luck with the project!

Actually, thinking about it I can't really argue with that. In my current game, kerbin orbit missions, orbital missions to the Mun and Minmus for EVA reports and a single Mun landing were enough to get me docking ports. They look fugly on the Mk1 Command Pod mind but that's another issue altogether. I'm running a Minmus orbital lab at the moment which should unlock most of the tech tree once I've picked up surface samples, seismic scans, temperature readings, materials data and Goo observations (oh yeah and more EVA reports) from all the Minmus biomes. Necrobones said it better than me though - it would be nice if stations and docking ports were viable earlier on to give some more variety to the early game. Anyhow - we can agree to disagree. As I said, I can't argue with your basic points - this is all just 'nice to have' stuff.
-
Well if it's singing you're in the mood for. This one was adapted by Bob Kerman from Sir Nahme's classic signature file and may have been borrowed from somewhere else before that. Written to commemorate Kerbalkind's first ever sub-orbital flight. At first I was afraid. I was petrified... Thought we would never make it back, if we let Jebediah drive. And so I spent oh so many nights, thinking what could all go wrong. But I got onboard - and I brought parachutes along... And now we're back! From the edge of space. I rode shotgun on the launch with my friend Bill in the far left place. We saw the Mun. We saw the stars. And we even made it home without too many scars!†Oh yeah we're back. From the edge of space! We soared across the sky - and you should have seen Jeb's face. We saw the Mun. We saw the stars. Even if the capsule seat, got imprinted on my...

I disagree. Tier 6 for your first docking ports, is not early in career mode. I would move Clamp-o-Tron Jrs back to Tier 4 (General Construction) and leave the others where they are. That way you get a docking port to go with each capsule size. Maybe move the 1-man lander can back to Tier 4 as well as a sort of Hitchhiker Jr. At which point you can do a lot of cool stuff with the Mk1 command pod, including basic space stations and Gemini or Apollo style missions. Granted, none of this is 'necessary' to further (and probably quicker) progress through the tech tree but it adds options and fun for people that like that kind of thing whilst making no difference at all to those folks who just want to burn through the tech tree as fast as possible.
-
Totally agree with both points, especially the first. It would certainly help if docking ports were unlocked a lot earlier. I don't mind building a linear space station to start with and then being able to build a more complicated one later but at the moment, you can't really build any sort of station until you're a good long way down the tech tree. Heck you could even have two levels of docking port - a basic one that you unlock early, to let you stick modules together and a more advanced one (coming in at about the point that they do right now) to let you transfer crew without sending them on EVA. Without wishing to open up the whole 'KSP vs realistic history argument' again, I also note that docking was an early priority for human space programs and the early space stations were mostly just a module of some kind with a docking port on one end Not quite sure how to deal with the second point though. Scotius makes a valid point about having long duration science missions later on, to give you science points to exchange for rep or cash but I can see that being hard to balance and possibly not worth it early in a career. I guess ideally, you would need to do some on-orbit science to unlock some of the tech tree. Regolith samples, temperature readings etc. are nice but they don't help you solve the problems of living, working and building stuff in space. However, this would probably make the tech tree / science system too complicated if the science you do actually has to plausibly match up to the technologies you unlock.

*blinks* Celerystick - I don't know what to say - 'Glad you're enjoying it' doesn't seem adequate somehow! Many thanks indeed for the enthusiasm and I just hope I can keep that going as the rest of the story unfolds. Madrias - hope your brain hasn't gotten too molten! There should be some good material coming up for the KIS/Rockomax story arc but you're right - it's harder to be quite as creative on that front. Hopefully there should be a couple of twists and turns to it yet though.

Abandoned Works I'm drawing a somewhat arbitrary line here but any unfinished piece of writing that was last updated in 2014 or earlier will eventually find its way to these dim and dusty shelves. Authors - please PM me if you'd like your work to be moved to the Works in Progress section, or better yet - add an update! Thanks, KSK. Hey folks. It's been a while but I thought a quick update was in order. First Flight to Fourteenth Flag is now very much in, along with a bunch of others! Patupi - its my pleasure. First Flight has been taking most of my time lately but the Library has not been forgotten! Speeding Mullet - not really I'm afraid although they do look very cool! The library was really intended for fiction - which does include AARs but usually with some dialogue to go with it. See Patupi's work for example. Besides - keeping on top of one forum is enough for me. The library now contains 99 finished works of all lengths and genres and another 65 works in progress.

OK, colour me intrigued! A demi-god villain with some kind of psychic link to the Krakensbane crew and lots of odd coincidences between past and future. Very much looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Why are my Mun orbits different from Apollo's?
KSK replied to Rus-Evo's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Minor nitpick - Apollo 13 didn't start out on a free-return trajectory. One of the first things they did after the accident was to make a course correction burn to get back onto a free return. But the point about eliminating points of failure still stands. -
I like it! Creepy and it has a nice twist at the end.

Woah - LOTR in five hours is good going. I was curious enough to do a quick search and found this site of word counts for famous novels. No idea how accurate it is though. For comparison, First Flight currently weighs in at just over 100K words. So yeah, not really novel length considering the genre. 123nick - if you want a very top level summary, First Flight is my take on the early years of the Kerbal Space Program, starting almost literally from 'parts found lying by the side of the road' and gradually progressing to more organised and ambitious flights. At the same time, it's also my take on the kerbals themselves, the world they live in, the society they've built and some of their history. I don't really want to go much beyond that. A three paragraph summary wouldn't tell you much more than that three line summary and I'm reluctant to do a more detailed one before the story is finished. I think everyone is getting something slightly different out of First Flight so far and I don't want to risk spoilering anyone at this stage. Hope that makes sense. Cheers, KSK.

Heh - until this morning, that wasn't a bad summary of where I was at. The last chapter was rather like the Moho 1 flight - a lot of the story had been leading up to that point and since then I've been in a 'OK that's done - now what?' frame of mind. I knew where I was going but was floundering around trying to figure out how to get there. After a burst of creativity this morning though (helped in no short measure by the enthusiastic comments here), I've got a rough sequence of events for the kermol story arc that I'm pretty happy with. I certainly don't plan to stick to it at all costs but I find it helpful to have something to kick-start the writing again. Of course, the kermol arc is just one of several - much pondering required on the others still. But yep - I'm pretty stoked at the moment!

This. Or you can EVA the data over to a return vehicle (more science for returned experiments even with the transmission bonus from the lab) and just use the lab to reset the experiments. I'm doing this at the moment with a lab in orbit around Minmus - Jeb is happily shuttling up and down to the different biomes, grabbing samples, materials data, temperature and goo readings at each and stashing them in the command pod for return. The lab crew has been up there for a while though - might send Jeb home after a couple more biome runs, bank the science points and use them to research the tech for the three-seater capsule that I can use to rotate the lab crew.

Nice work! To me Kyrian looks like Minmus before it froze.

Nice flag. I'll bite though - what symbolism did you have in mind?

Settling Laythe: Snippet of a possible TNF sidestory or sequel
KSK replied to JakeGrey's topic in KSP Fan Works
Well, given the inspiration for this story snippet, I can't claim to be even remotely neutral here but in the words of Hanfrod at KSC - "You know what? I don't care. That was friggin' beautiful." -
Hey Jack, Welcome to the thread and thank you for the kind words! Likewise, thanks Patupi - an enlarged Kerm is another intriguing possibility for sure. I tell you folks, I'm not sure there'll be any surprises left at this rate - somebody on this thread is bound to have thought of them, long before I get that far with the story. Which is actually pretty cool, although hopefully there'll be some twists and turns in the details that you don't see coming!

I confess that a new chapter was my first thought. Not to worry - sounds like you have enough computer woes to be getting on with. We'll still be waiting eagerly when you get them sorted out! The Galaxy Quest link does indeed require registration. A job for tonight methinks. -
Tonight, I begin my first serious project on the new machine!
KSK replied to Whackjob's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Now there's a thought. If the actual Kraken easter egg is a separate 'craft' and not just a bit of scenery.... Well then, with sufficient Claws and sufficient boosters - and a crazy enough engineer - it should be possible to haul the actual Kraken back to KSC as Jeb's Trophy Fish.
