Largest Aircraft to Land at KSC Island Challenge

Here are my two models : (I used mechjeb to figure out the crew, didn't know how else lol) GTRX-100 (click here for craft file): This thing land on the island, I just don't have photos. Craft file available for both models. -Capacity = 164 -Weight = 153 Tons -Top Speed = 185m/s -Stall Speed = ~30m/s Picture: GTRX-300 (click here for craft file) : Extended version of GTRX-100, crew capacity is almost doubled, other characteristics are quite similar. Additional landing gear added at the rear to protect from tail strike. This is my entry for the challenge. -Capacity = 292 -Weight = 270 Tons -Top Speed = 155m/s -Stall Speed = ~35m/s Pictures : -

@OP : Can you clear up a little confusion I'm having...Is the entire craft supposed to have 2 stages or is just the lander part that has to be in two stages only...?cuz I've got the entire craft in 2 stages. -

total weight : ~360 tons lander weight (full fuel) : ~33 tons lander deltaV : ~5,000 m/s lander TWR at kerbin : 0.74 rocket deltaV : ~4,000 m/s rocket TWR at kerbin : 2.34 link to craft file = http://pmc.do.am/ksp/challenge_stock.craft It goes to the Mun and back. No docking port. No RCS. No action groups used. Everything is manual. Has parachutes but they're only useful for kerbin(can land at ~8m/s with parachutes only) and I think its called eve (the green one with heavy atmosphere and strong gravity). May just work if landed in a crater on duna too. Lands on Mun with about 2,000 m/s or more deltaV to spare depending on how you play. So I suppose its enough to go to Duna. But I don't think it will be able to return. Unless a docking port is added and a refueler is sent to duna orbit. Pictures: (the one in landing pictures doesn't have science equipment and has mechjeb. the craft in link has no mechjeb (only 100% stock parts) and has the science equipment added.) And sorry no pictures of takeoff from kerbin... -

I also want to participate, but I don't know whether there's a weight or part limit? and 100% stock means no mechjeb ? cuz theres people here using kerbal engineer...so..... -

absolutely correct. plus you gain weight with the adapters etc cuz you need round fuselage type structure to fit the red(the ones that work at 2500m) parachutes in. the red parachute weighs 200kg each, you can hardly fit two of them within 500kg. you probably need a ton or two of extra weight to land entirely on parachutes. -

the lander is a rover. I dont make anything without wheels. Whats the point of going on to different planet when you cant move around on it? I think 30m/s with parachutes is good enough. the red parachute itself weighs 0.2. And I need two of them to get to 30m/s or so. here are some pics of the rover: this is the earlier one: And this is the later one, note I've replace inefficient orange thrusters with bigger, more efficient white engine and then added the orange ones, in case more thrust is needed(removed them in the latest one which I'll be landing soon). Also, added those ugly bars to avoid rolling over as happened with the first one (quicksave saved me lol) And the additional fuel tank (which I forgot to connect to the small tanks and wondered where the extra fuel went lol): -

the most efficient way to achieve orbit varies from rocket to rocket. rockets with lower TWR will have to go much higher in a straight vertical line before they can start turning. High TWR rockets can turn when ever they want. My rover is low TWR, about ~1.25 on kerbin surface. Thats a lot on Duna, but not enough that I could turn at 500m. How I lift off doesn't make a difference, cuz the lander+orbiter refuels in kerbin orbit and goes to duna on full tanks. btw, whats a good place to go after I've done moon, minmus and duna? (I've landed successfully on these three already) minmus was quite boring. nothing challenging at all, easy to land, easy to take off. -

i use parachutes to slow down to around 30m/s and then the two engines to reduce speed to 5m/s and land. it takes i think less than 30 delta V to land. After that I'm left with ~400 or so delta V to get back in orbit, which is according to you, not enough. And I've tried it, with 400 delta V I can only get to around 40km straight up and then back. So I guess a velocity of about 800-1000m/s is needed for low duna orbit (less than 100km). which makes it 1500m/s total. 500 to get up to altitude and then 1000 prograde to get in orbit. And how about the docking idea? -
I have a craft that weighs app. 12tons. It lands on duna fine. But then it has left just around 400delta V to get back to orbit and dock to big rocket. and 400 is not enough. the only engines are two mark radial 55 blah blah, so keep that in mind (using this info, you should be able to get a TWR at all altitudes.) So can anyone tell me how much delta V is needed ? I need just enough to get back in orbit. Or is there a way to dock vehicles on surface? my rover has a port right on top of it. If I can land a fuel carrying craft right on top of the rover and dock them, it could work. Has anyone here done that before? Tell me if craft files are needed. thanks.

I got it working. you "control from" one port and target a port. Then you line up the other using E and Q while its still "moving forward" to the port. it worked. that other hydratech something rcs couldn't work on my station cuz there was no "calculate-able" place for the targets. It would have been trial and error with the distances and I don't have the time to launch 20 spacecrafts just to make it work lol...

damn it. now I'll have to launch two more space stations, then re-dock all the fuel tanks on to it. you see, I'm making a big modular space station where I'll add many small fuel tanks for refueling big crafts to other planets. But I'm having a problem, it is wobbly. the tanks weight around 20 tons when full. And they wobble alot when attached to the station using the shielded ports as you can see in the picture. So is the only solution the tri adapter and multiple ports ? and will that work on autopilot (I doubted this part, thats why I never put the multiple port system)

The problem is that the autopilot does not see any obstacles and finds the shortest possible route which is usually through the station components and crashes. Is there an obstacle detection mod which checks the path for obstacles and makes new ones to make sure the craft doesn't bang into any other object...?

I have this one big truck of 40+ tons that has a rocket that can take it to duna and while in kerbin and duna orbits, I could rotate the craft at good speeds (about 15 degrees per second, maybe more). But one of the crafts I have linked here (the fuel tank) is just about 20tons or even lesser in kerbin orbit and it accelerates like maybe 1deg/sec/sec. Did you try the two files for yourself? Both of them have large ASAS. and the station I have 4 more smaller SASes as well. So 5 in total. Btw I have landed on moon, minmus and almost landed on duna but I still can't dock. I'll check out the video, maybe it helps.
