Do Kerbals actually survive the falls through space? Yes because there is not heat damage? Can they be outfitted with their own parachutes?

I made myself go to the Mun before buying the game. Then I went to the Mun and back with the full game, that was really hard the first time. I have tried many times to build planes but they have always failed. I had a really hard time making it to Minimus with a rover but finally made it. Then I updated to 0.21 and started building a Space Station.
