No such thing as cheating if you're only playing for yourself. In an SSTO challenge, sure, as it's not really single-stage-to-orbit. If you're just playing to have fun, don't worry so much about whether something is cheating.

You could try UbioZor's part welding plugin. It lets you merge groups of parts together in order to raise your FPS (and negate a lot of wobble).
