The Official Kerbin Cup Tournament Thread - Final Entries Posted

I have to say I envy the forum's loyalty. I'll bet hardly any redditors even know we won! Maybe it was the Kerbalesque style of our submission that gave us bonus points with the devs, but in the end, even if it was made to look easy, my teammates' talent for efficient design and navigation really showed. I know I couldn't have done it! I don't imagine we won by any big margin. Wouldn't have wanted to make the decision myself, but hey! In the end, it's all low-stakes fun and games. *Slow clap* it was a fun tournament and I admire everyone's sportsmanship. Ya'll are great! -

What technique did you use to create that effect? It's amazing! How does it perform against regular suspension in a hairpin turn? Or flipping up on a hard stop? On the Mun? There's so much potential for realistic experiments with a concept like that! Good stuff! -

More like "plank length". I love the ole' "common cosmetic utensil -> gun" gag haha -

If that challenge doesn't include the prefix "pico" or "nano", i'll be brushing my teeth with a .45 come Friday -

So will voting end on Monday? Or does it end tonight? I'm very anxious to see what the next challenge will be. -

One more! "Hexacolor light panel". <- SCRATCH THAT. More like 3kk color. Don't even know what to call this thing. 9 sets of base color lights, and 1 tone light. I have no idea how many color combinations this is, but it's a lot. If it's 10!, than that means there's over 3,000,000 color combinations. It's only 23 parts and can easily be strapped to a station. I think most of the contestants are pretty sick of the "build the rocket strewn about on KSC's lawn" challenge for the moment It's a good idea though! You should post it elsewhere for more attention. -

Thanks a million Whack! The Munar arch-shot - LOADS of quicksaving/quickloading. Same with the VAB landing: **alright we're sitting at 648 fuel, lets turn 30 degrees and burn till 600. K it's a little off to the north, far off to the east. Quickload. Let's try 35 and stop at 590.** etc. etc. over and over. My teammate chicknblender took great care in his tour piloting, and then I came along and just bashed the thing into Minmus burning off a TON of carefully conserved fuel Figured it was a fitting thing to do with the ship... I wanted to go BRAHHHHHHH!! the whole time. Such a baadaass craft. Kind of a shame we didn't have any competition, but I'm half-glad we didn't know till the end so we could still put out as good a submission as we were capable of in the time frame. I can't compliment your challenge enough! Thanks for the comments and the challenge! -

Having all of the docking ports perfectly aligned in the VAB must have helped quite a bit. Personally, I think we just got a central column with commitment issues and a larger than average "personal space bubble". -

^ Cool concept! It's adorable! Looks a little short. I think if it had twice as many fuel tanks the proportions would be right on. Man this challenge would've been so much different if that was the ship we had to lift off the ground... -

It's bittersweet being given an early victory. I'm just sad that fewer people will probably look at our submission since there's less reason to do so. My team worked really hard and collaborated thoroughly on this one. Looking forward to competing against the forum's winning team! Fingers crossed we get extra time on the next challenge too! Good stuff by the forum! We've got stiff competition coming our way. -

Whackjob, the accidental creator of the most diabolical KSP challenge of all time. (And one of the coolest and most unique) My hat is so far off to you it's in orbit. -
With the new Klaw part in the ARM patch 2.3.5, planes that can land at the runway over and over are pretty easy to reuse. Just drive up to something with a fuel tanker and klaw and bam! Refueled.

My teammates and I have experienced a few bugs. At one point I had some trouble making quicksaves that would actually load. Then I loaded one that was apparently bugged out because the entire screen went white with explosion particle effects, but slowly overtime and without sound. Quicksaving problems can be solved by repeatedly backing them up So it shouldn't be a game-restarting problem, and if it happened once, it shouldn't happen to someone again if they're being careful. Also, my teammates and I had the mysterious acceleration problem in orbit. Suddenly the ship parts are rapidly propelling themselves without any explanation. I was able to solve this problem by force quitting the application and restarting. It's luck of the draw whether it happens or not, but again, quicksave backups save the day! -

Reading the rules over again, I don't really see that constraint. All I see is, "Your challenge is to take it to orbit (I tested it myself, it is SSTO compliant, but will need refueling before going elsewhere). Once in orbit, go on a sightseeing tour." So "taking it to orbit" could mean a lot of things I think. You could break it into pieces and fly every piece into orbit by themselves according to this wording -

I believe terminal velocity makes powered landings a lot easier Especially when that ship is empty of fuel, landing it shouldn't be hard. Landing on the VAB - that will be hard. -

At this point in my science playtime, I'm running into the multiple docking port problem pretty badly. However, it's only been with ships I make, so hopefully the perfect alignment of the ship parts will make the boosters link to the central shaft nicely. Multiple docking ports is still kinda sketchy...
