How do I complete a rescue contract?

Just adding one more voice to say how unintuitive this is, if it weren't for this thread I don't think I'd ever have found out! I get KSP is not really known for it's accessible controls but it's the first time I got this frustrated by not knowing what I'm doing wrong. Well, maybe since my first docking.
