Okay I'll have a look at my staging then. Operator error as usual
-
I have never noticed this happening before today, although I haven't actually needed to use one for a week or so so I may have forgotten. Anyway I have a Mk16 parachute mounted on my lander, and as I lose altitude and speed the parachute automatically deploys. Is that usual behaviour? I would rather have manual control over its deployment.

Well I am at the opposite end of the scale, I've only been playing since 26th December. Before getting the game I watched a lot of Youtube videos to give me an idea of what to expect from the game. Anyway I started out in sandbox mode and couldn't get my head around all the different parts, it was all too much. I made a few ships but other than just building ship after ship I wasn't sure what direction to take and felt a little lost. So I restarted in career mode and it all began to make sense to me then. Having limitations on available parts in my opinion makes the game more enjoyable and gives you goals. It will be good when they flesh out career mode some more and we have to actually buy parts, you'll really have to think then about building and the costs. Hopefully they'll also add in G-Force effects on the Kerbins, and oxygen supplies, food , water etc. Planning a mission to another planet would be much more in depth if you had to take supplies with you to survive, and not taking enough could mean you lose Kerbins which might impact other parts of the game, like recruitment for instance.

Okay so this time it is actually a bug and not me doing something wrong again. Cheers.

Landing on the dark side
steelgrey replied to steelgrey's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
The problem I am having is purely one of not enough light, I cant plan a descent to the surface as I cant see anything its totally black (as it would be I know). So as much as I would love to land in a crater, I cant even see one. Theres no gamma or brightness settings in the options to change, other than cranking the brightness on the screen right up as I approach the dark side I cant see any way to make it any easier. Guess I'm better off just avoiding landing in the dark until my skills improve. -
Well I spent a long long time putting struts on my ship. I decided to save the whole lower section as a sub assembly. So I disconnect the ship from below the command pod and drag it to sub assembly, of course after that I have to drag it back to recreate the ship again. The problem is when I reconnected the lower half of the ship the vast majority of my pain staking strut placement has disappeared

Landing on the dark side
steelgrey replied to steelgrey's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Yes that could easily be achieved by just adding a camera to the parts and have a small viewscreen with a video feed. Are the devs taking on board any ideas at all? -

Yes some form of ground scanning radar would be useful. -
[SHOWCASE] Most insane Aircraft
steelgrey replied to Stilgar2300's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
katateochi that is a work of art. I had no idea you could build stuff that looks this good. Are any of you using any kind of mods to add these parts, or are they available in the vanilla game? -

Great designs on here, I'm especially liking the Whitebird, looks pretty much like the actual Blackbird, well done good work. -
Landing on the dark side

Kerbal alarm clock is fantastic, thank you for suggesting it to me, I'm not really sure why that is not included in the game already to be honest as it ought to be. Thanks all for your posts, I think I will simply avoid landing in the dark for now, at least until I have got better at flying and landing without making mistakes. -
Landing on the dark side

Is that a mod? I'm trying to steer clear of mods at the moment and learn it in vanilla before tinkering with it. -
Landing on the dark side
steelgrey replied to steelgrey's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Now that is useful information. I'll attempt my next landing using IVA. Off topic I know, but I wish the time warp would stop automatically at 1 min from your maneuver point, the amount of times I've overshot when warping is ridiculous. -
I usually land on the light side of the mun or minmus (as far as I have got yet), and attempted a landing on the dark side of the mun for the science. Well it might sound like a silly question but what advice can people give me as far as actually seeing what I am doing when landing. I have fitted lights, mk1 and mk2 to my lander, but they really don't help and its hard to judge mountains or hills. I tried it a few times and slammed into the ground each time. There is no brightness or gamma settings in the options either. So any advice would be much appreciated.

I feel a fool yet again, it was as you say. Also sorry I posted in the wrong section, I'm new and won't make the mistake again.

I built a rocket and noticed that some of the thrusters were running out of fuel unexpectedly early. When I went back to vehicle assembly I noticed that some of the fuel tanks connected to it have no fuel in them. Is there any reason for this? They are connected by an outgoing fuel line to another thruster in the center of the rocket.
-
Okay thanks for your replies, I will not use time warp when I'm out of the ship again. Am I right in saying the physics switch off when you time warp? I'm sure I heard it on a Youtube video.

While on another excursion to Minmus I took Bill Kerman off for a wander to the top of some nearby mountains. It was fun as the gravity let me travel far with little fuel used. Anyway I got to the top of the mountain and I decided to make Bill jump off the top and see how far he could float. As I was running I tried to time warp and I got a message saying I could not because the ship was under acceleration. This is odd as I didn't think Bill had a throttle, his pack was put away and he was just moving forward and jumping. Then I got the mission briefing up and it said Bill Kerman crashed into Minmus? I laughed because I have a quicksave just before the accident, but it still puzzled me and I wondered if it happens to anybody else at all.

The only thing thing that I care to see in .24
steelgrey replied to Wesmark's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Wow they look fantastic, I can only dream of being that good at designing and building. -
Thanks for the advice, it has to be something I did wrong, although I asked because I was curious if it was a bug. Anyway I decided to redesign the ship I went to Minmus in as my staging was catastrophic and it was a miracle I made it to orbit let alone Minmus. When I get back there I'll make doubly sure to turn off any time warp. Would be good if you were asked if you wanted to deactivate time warp if you clicked on the pilots portrait, be helpful for people like me who are new to the game.

More misery. I fixed the build and took the aerial off, then proceeded to fly to Minmus again. I did an EVA report while leaving Kerbin and then flew with no issues to Minmus. I got into orbit and decided to do another EVA, but I can't click on Jebediah anymore in the bottom right corner. If I click on the command pod there is no option to do a crew report either. He is in the pod I presume as his picture is in the lower right as I said, and a quick look at the map reveals he's not floating in space somewhere. Any ideas anybody?
-
Oh how I wish it would not allow you to place objects that block access to the pod door. I just flew for the first time all the way to Minmus, was so pleased I did it. Landed beautifully, couldn't get out because the aerial was blocking the door. Oh I was upset I can tell you! Bottom line is it was my stupid fault with the build, but I do wish some kind of alert text would let you know your blocking the door when building.

Accidentally moving parts
steelgrey replied to steelgrey's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Oh how stupid of me, why I didnt think to drop the part before attempting to undo, I feel rather foolish now. Thank you all for pointing out my error, I'm sure it won't be the last time it happens as I'm a complete noob. -
I am having serious problems while building my rocket. The problem is that if I accidentally click on a part of the ship while attempting to move a strut for example, I end up moving half the ship instead by mistake. Sometimes I just cannot get it to fit back together after this happens. I have had to scrap 2 rockets today that took me probably half an hour each, and all because I moved half the ship with a stray click and couldn't piece it back together after. Ctrl + Z is listed as being undo, yet I press it and it does nothing.

I took a chance on it on boxing day in the steam sales. I have played many hours of Lunar Lander and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of flying in zero gravity. I don't buy early release games as I don't have the patience with bugs, but I made an exception this time and am so glad I did. Why do I play it, well as others have said I too love anything to do with space, and seeing the solar system in the game just makes me want to go and visit each planet. I have only just mastered getting into orbit but have yet to make it to Mun. Can't wait to land there. Then on to the other planets. Its the feeling of achievement I like, and this game delivers that. Watching videos on youtube people make it look easy, but, for a total novice like me playing career mode, its anything but.
