Help vessel with no core or command pod..

Recommended Posts

Ok I need help I have a vessel that now, cough cough, has no core or command pod. It does have 2 HitchHiker cans which are empty. If I put a Kerbal in there, will I be able to give the vessel commands or do I absolutely need to get a command pod attached to it?

You need a command pod or probe.

(Technically, you need a part with the 'Command' module - you can see which do using the VAB parts filters.)

The Hitchhiker is not capable of controlling a vessel, so you will have to attach something, either by dicking ports, or with the Klaw.

Here is the problem...

It has docking ports, but it is a bit balanced, worried it will fall over... and how do I build a rover to dock on that?

Would I be better to simply Klaw it?

first attempt to recreate it and build a rover to dock at KSP... sigh..

So you want that thing off and back to where?

Alternativly, try to build a crane that fitts to that docking port and lift it off, to rebalance you have multiple choices. One would be a very lengthy crane from the docking port side, the other, a crane that turns this thing by 90 degree and lifts it off. Be creative, with that docking port on it you basically can rescue it.

Oh well, most simple solution, build a mini lander in the vab that fits on that docking port. It just needs a com module and you are also fully capable of controlling it :)

I dont want to move it again, jsut plug in a cpu and turn on the karbonite drill... lol... I'm just pretty sure that I'm not going to get the docking ports aligned right. How do I build a crane? any mechanics/robotics would be amazing. I was planing to use the rover pictured. Adjust it to fit on the launch pad, then get it up to the moon. Shove some extra RCS under neath so if I come up short I can try a little jump, and maybe some landing struts, in case I need to get higher too... but that seems a lot of effort, It is probably actually easier to redesign the base and fly it up there again...

If you're modding, a great way to go would be the Kerbal Attachment System mod. Get either a small crewed lander or a crewed rover within a few tens of metres from that vessel, get the kerbal to take the winch from his vessel and attach it to the other vessel, and you then have control of both.

EDIT: KAS will also let a kerbal on EVA attach a command seat to the top of that vessel, which they can then use to control it.

KAS then; land a probe next to it. Get a kerbal on EVA to run a pipe from the probe to the miner. It'll act as one vessel from there on :)

*edit* You'll need a KAS 'pipe end point' on each vessel. Happily kerbals can move them, so feel free to have the probe carry two, and detach/attach the spare onto the mining rig. After that, just hit the 'link' button.

Yep, you can attach a winch and then treat the two vessels like they're docked (with a long, flexible dock). If you've never tried it before then you should really practice at KSC, but a winch and a couple of removable attachment points are all you need.

If it were me (I don't have KAS), I'd probably try something like this:

CPU%20Unit.png

That's a Clamp-o-Tron, RGU-001S, FL-R25, 8 OX-STAT panels, and 4 RV-105 thruster blocks.

Mass is about 1.5 t (less in most games, as I massify the massless parts) and has a Mun TWR of 1.6ish with upward of 2000 m/s of ÃŽâ€v.

Fly it to the Mun, land it next to the base, and then (carefully) play with the translation controls to dock it.

I've used the RGU, rather than smaller, lighter cores partly for form factor, and partly because it has target tracking SAS, which should allow you to not worry too much about where it's pointing.

The 'base' it self has about 8 pipe ends on it! :D Also the orginal core is still intact on top of a fuel tank at the bottom of the hill... hmm..

That is awesome!
