Astroids are not importiant in career mode, but my idea is every 4-5 years a astroid distaster happens and you have 2 choices one you can accept the goal of stopping it 2 you can get the kerbal millitary to fire a missile at it in the hope of stopping it, doing this will stop all contracts and massively cut your funding because you didn't stop it.

The first choice you can try and stop It, if you stop it massive boost in funding and more experienced Kerbals will automaticly come to your space program, if you fail to stop it 2 things can happen you can have a emp astroid that makes all battery's on kerbin and around kerbin loose the ability to store power and all solar pannles fail, this will destroy rovers and bases, the other thing can happen is a more disasterous event that sets kerbals back to the Stone Age and cuts all funding, that means no tech, you can still manage current missions but you can't launch anymore till you get funding and technology back.

What do you think ?

That may change, though....

This would be interesting if there were cities on Kerbin...

It's an interesting idea, especially losing all tech (and probably, I assume, going back to farm buildings), but it would work better as a very rare event. Otherwise players would start going, "an asteroid? AGAIN!?" and get bored of having to intercept it every time.

Problem is, it would start to feel weird if it was the only rare event...

Please, no. This amounts to "You MUST play the game this way or face massive arbitrary penalties; if you don't care for asteroid interception, too bad, that's a mandatory part of career." Also, it means failing one mission automatically makes you lose hours and hours of playtime on multiple missions unrelated to the failed one. If you decide you want your career to focus on landings and don't feel like asteroid redirection, adding this would mean you can no longer play career.

Options, options. I like this idea, but some don't. It could be toggled on the start of a new game or through the debug menu.

Or, we could have Asteroid Redirect Mission contracts. (I don't know if they're already there, but I've never gotten one.) (Make it miss (or hit) Kerbin)

I think it should be a option and you should be able to choose the chance of it happening

Yea allowing disasters like in sim city could be fun. This is a good game for it since you can hypothetically do something about it. And even if you didn't you could use it as a way to produce more science. Say even if the asteroid doesn't strike physically you could similate it by making a crater with extra science if you study the crater. And there could be even more science if you stop it(assuming you can) and study it in orbit. Or other benefits could exist in place of or on top of science like using it for some other purpose like a fueling station if you do stop it(assuming which way you use to stop it. capture/deflection/destruction/etc if possible. I would assume you would need mods for destruction unless you hurl it into the sun, which is technically deflection.).
