Parts fabrication building?

Recommended Posts

How would people feel about a new building that was oriented on parts fabrication. It had the most basic 3d modeling abilities(simplifies or restricted to game needs possibly) and the ability to blend multiple various current parts together and save them as .craft or in the subassemblies for use in your planes. do it the simpliest way but make it so it has a mode for any special needs and give it access to all stuff like in the VAB type buildings so you can scale it or add preexisting parts. This could allow completely custom parts and condense current ones to single parts.

I would think the only down side is, depending on how it was designed, it may need work limiting any edits to existing parts or forcing weight of things made base on some criteria. Though if they made up some logic for everything in the game I bet it could be doable. Maybe as a future update or something.

Nah. I think something like that should be a companion program. Like the creation kits for bethesda games. It would be much easier to use it that way rather than running along with the game and bloat things up even more. I want ram for my mods!

I really like this idea, but I also think this should be an optional program which is not needed to run KSP.

I do like this idea either way. May be very basic shapes (cone, cylinder, hemisphere; think Procedural Parts), some assets (pipes, valves, engine nozzles, ladders, portholes, hatches), set of stock textures and that's all.

Maybe with additiinal IVA editor - the shape of part outside, inner shape divison, plus other assets plus cameras plus clickabkes.

I think what OP means would be more like crafting than creating/editing game assets, so it would be integral to the gameplay, and should be part of the game itself.

I would like to see something like that, but it would be a substantial addition to the game, and i don't think it is realistic to expect Squad to add it this late in development - if ever.

Maybe it can be made as a mod after the dust of the 1.0 release has settled.

A part welder building? It could work.

- Select a parent part

- Only parts, say, up to 25% the volume or mass of the parent are able to be attached to the parent

- Saved as a subassembly (or "Prefab" welded part)

- The more of them you use, the cheaper they get up to a point; up to 25% discount?

Did you check out Extraplanetary Launchpads yet?

What it does is letting you construct any .craft in a factory, provided you have enough of "Rocket Parts" resource in stock - which you can either take with you or generate in a smelter.

In conjunction with Karbonite (or Kethane) and KAS (for resource transfer) you can build self-sustained factory outposts - awesomeness

Update:

KAS itself already lets you carry basic parts to space and assemble them anywhere, enough to create small rovers or space probes.

Yes please... this has been a long term wish of mine.

Would be great if tied to subassemblies. even better if parts weld in to a single stage unit.

Also would love to be able to go and edit a subassembly already in use on a craft and have it update as the craft is loaded into the VAB/SPH. Like using symbols in a CAD program.

Fully custom shape parts or custom texturing would be icing on the cake.

I think you don't really understand it: this thread is not for making crafts outside the VAB, but for creating new part models with an easy-to-use editor, or merging parts into one part (not really welding as that keeps everything from both parts, but just cherry-pick the things you like about part #1 and #2 and put them together in part #3).

  • 3 weeks later...

Hello, i am lucas, i thought of an idea for a building that needs to be added to KSP: The workshop.

The workshop would be close to both R&D and the VAB.

but the point of the workshop is it is like an assembly building, but you cannot launch from it. it has a lot of parts, such as generators, tiny engines, probe cores and batteries, maybe even parts for new engines. and the idea is that you make your own parts! like tiny probes, landers, and even micro planes!

and you load these into your assembly buildings, and they are one part! saving space, and over complicated constructs, awkward zooms, and so much more!

Let me know what you think!

Not bad idea, but i think it would require strong programming. An intermediate option could be adding something like the "tweakable parts" mod, and depending of the level of upgrading of the Workshop, players could tweak more or less...

I think it could be used but in a bit of a different way. TO encourage you to recover parts. You could order a brand new ship at a rate of say X or something, but you could have a list of parts in storage. You'd already have some parts, the command capsule, boosters, etc. which could be then reused. Since you already have that actual part you wouldn't need to buy it a second time, unless you wanted to. May pay a small refurbishing charge depending on where is lands.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
