The Chunkin' Challenge -- Haul Out your Trebuchets!

Recommended Posts

The Chunkin' Challenge

This is totally not a rip-off of Punkin' Chunkin'.

Calling all catapult makers, Kerbal flingers, and other cannon builders!

Here is a challenge for one and all! Who can build the ultimate weapon of war snack and science transfer device?

We shall see.

Categories of Submission

There are four divisions that users may participate in. Each has its own scoreboard.

Replica_catapult.jpg

This division relies on some form of tension mechanism, like an arm that may be bent back. Go wild!

RULES:

1 - The arm may not be assisted when throwing by any means besides its own tendency to return to it's original position.

Other than that, it's home free. For example: A fuel tank is mounted on the end of the arm, which bends it down, and then released, which causes it to spring back up.

trebuchet.jpg

Devices submitted here must rely on gravity to swing the payload.

RULES:

1 - The arm may not be assisted when throwing by any means besides the force of gravity.

Example: Large fuel tank brings arm around, payload released on maximum swing.

One of the most amusing and dangerous divisions, things that spin go here.

RULES:

1 - There are no rules! (Besides the general ones listed below) The arm may be powered by anything you want.

NOTES:

- The machine must remain stationary while firing. (It can't just spin in a circle on the runway, some part of it has to move)

Example: Reaction wheel tower on plane wheels with the payload mounted on an arm, spins and releases for distance.

jpeg

Fire the Mass Relay! Use your engines to shoot the payload as far as possible.

RULES:

1 - You may not clip nozzles on engines, however, clipping other parts of engines and having many nozzles are allowed (And recommended!)

Submission Guidelines:

Screenshots of:

-Craft on Runway prior to firing.

-Craft during and after firing.

-Maximum height achieved for payload

-Moment-Of-Impact for payload (Hit Esc to pause if you need to)

-To qualify for any of the movement bonuses, screenshots of the craft doing the task are required. (Moving, swimming, flying)

General Rules:

-Catapults (Or whatever you want to call your machine) must remain stationary while firing.

-Use of infiniglide or physics exploits is explicitly prohibited.

-Catapults shall be fired from the runway on Kerbin.

-For entry to be scored, after or before firing you must switch to the payload. The payload will be destroyed*, and the distance shown to the catapult still on the runway is needed.

-Catapults must use the

Catapult Payload Download

-Catapults must release payloads to the East.

-STOCK ONLY. No massive Big Bertha engines firing your thing out of the solar system. (Thanks, Darren9.)

-No debug menu, either.

* - Most likely, barring luck or glitches.

Scoring:

Over the Moat: 1 point per meter payload travels. (Ground Distance Covered)

Clear the Walls: 1 point per meter of height payload achieves. (Highest Altitude Achieved)

Bonus Points:

Environmentalist: 100 extra points for re-usability. *

Mobile Forces: 20 points for mobility, 0.25 extra points for each m/s of speed achieved on level ground.

Nava-pult: 20 points for amphibious capability, 0.5 extra points for each m/s of speed achieved.

Airstrike: 20 points for flight capability, 1 extra point per 500 meters above sea level achieved under engine power. **

* - Can catapult re-load itself for another firing? Does not need to actually fire more than once: The payload may be attached by a decoupler and still qualify for this award.

** - Limited to the edge of Kerbin's atmosphere. (For a total of 140 extra points)

Good Luck!

My own submissions are coming soon.

It was only a matter of time...

Couple of questions - Infinigliders and physics exploits are forbidden... Can you give us some examples of said physics exploits?

What about debug menu (hacking gravity is obviously out of question... but what abour infinite fuel for the launching sequence)?

You should probably put some ceiling on what counts for the "Airstrike" part... Or can I actually hover at the edge of Kerbin's SOI and shoot the payout at Eeloo?

Extra points if we can get it out of Kerbins SOI? :P This sounds like fun! Working on something now. And i assume mods are allowed? EDIT: Just saw stock only.. Thanks! Though i would like Stock + IR and maybe KAS :P but ill still play!

Yeah, no mods for the sake of convenience.

And if you can make it out of Kerbin's SOI from the runway, props to you.

Catapults shall be fired from the runway on Kerbin.

Fixed some stuff. Anyhow, Deutherius, "must remain stationary while firing." As in, landed and not moving.

Oh, my bad. I missed the part about firing from the runway.

I presume the moving/flying/swimming capability can be demonstrated in a different attempt than the chunkin' itself? (e.g. fly the device to space, revert to runway and actually shoot the payload from there)

Cool. But how does it work?

I'll change the OP in a moment to account for that. :)

It's just your regular mass driver. Big fat engine (with cowling still on in picture) is fired at the same time as the payload is separated. Exhaust from the engine flings the payload away.

Does that fall into the Air Cannon category?

Got one for the Gravity Catagory. Its a prototype proof of concept, Gonna scale it up later :D Just wanna give some folks some ideas and get the ball rolling! The engine, on the throw bar is only used to set, the catapult (which is held in place by the landing legs) After that the engine is decoupled and the throw is done via gravity.

Only managed a measly 78m and a 100m heighth , but it should improve with a scaled up version!

EDIT: Does the imgur tag show up properly? Or is it just me?

Oooh, very nice, you guys. :)

I'm working on a MUCH better rotor design, and I finally managed to make it so that it doesn't clip and freak out every five seconds. I just need to make it taller, so I can make the arm longer.

Managed about 300 meters with 2 long I-beams for an arm. I'm hoping for at least a kilometer.

Foxster: Your design will be added to the OP. It qualifies.

Rabidninjawombat: While a great idea, your design seems to use Ven's Stock Part Revamp. I'll hold off on the final ruling for the moment, but it would be much appreciated if you can make it 100% stock.

EDIT: Updated OP.

I am afraid I do not have the craft file anymore. That is from around 0.22 or so. Well... it won't make it to the leaderboard, but atleast you have seen the video.

Surely you can slap something together for this challenge. :)

Anyways, the rotor now has RCS engines for acceleration. 500 meters.

Shouldn't be hard to reproduce. Not much different from my last effort i.e. a big fat engine wot you drop stuff into the maw of.

EDIT: Updated OP.

The stock part revamp only changes the looks of the parts (it doesn't change performance as far as i know) But ill be happy to throw the craft file into a stock install and update the photos. (Sorry completely forgot i was using the Stock part revamp)

EDIT: Updated Imgur album, new pictures , complete stock install :) bout the same performance. 99m high , 86m coverered, I could probably get a better launch angle.

An entry for the Centrifugal Division as well. Design is a Free floating rotor using plane wheels.

305m traveled, 285m high.

Im having too much fun fooling around with these. I usually am all form and function and traditional rocket buisness :P

Alright, I have a quick submission for the "air" cannon division.

http://imgur.com/a/hEs7Y

Just one thing I don't understand - how can the ground distance covered be so small? The payload was obviously delivered over 1.8 km away.

Very good question... I'm not entirely sure!

But as long as it's consistent among all users, it's the measurement I'll use.

EDIT:

Unintentional staging error was unintentional. :D
