To the sun and back

Recommended Posts

Challenge:

get into kerbin orbit, intoand orbit around the sun that is no more than 1.5 billion m in diameter, and return safely to kerbin

Use and mods that you want (exept stuff like instantorbit) I suggest TTAS (thrionitech aerospace) 0.2

If KSP worked properly, this would be pretty easy. However, the Kraken bug means that it\'s nearly impossible to keep control of your ship at the 30,000 m/sec++ velocities at that orbital altitude. Come on Squad -- please fix the Kraken!

Maybe you can help by fixing the inaccuracies in your post? Orbital speed at 15 billion metres altitude above Kerbol is 8821 m/s, not 30000 m/s.

I\'ve flown numerous missions outside Kerbin\'s SOI and I\'ve only encountered the Kraken once. I was able to regain control of my spacecraft in that case by turning off the SAS and hand flying.

In addition to SunJumper\'s example above, check out the following threads. I think they illustrate quite well that it isn\'t 'nearly impossible' to keep control of your ship in Kerbol orbit:

RedDwarfIV\'s \'The Adventures of Solar Observer\'

Togfox\'s \'Recording Solar Flares\' challenge

BoolyBooly\'s \'Shoot for the Sun!\' challenge

The kraken really depends how complicated your ship is. Really complicated ships are effected much more.

The last kerbol mission I was on the kraken was quite bad, but this is because I was attempting to reverse the direction of my orbit to smack into kerbin at 18,000m/s (I didn\'t make it, not enough delta V), so needless to say my ship was quite large. However, I was still able to control my ship, mainly by exploiting what I call the time warp ASAS. If you jump to x5 warp for a second all your ships rotatiion and stuff stops, making it a lot easier when your controls are absolutely totalled by the kraken (At one point left arrow pulled me up, right arrow pulled me left, down pulled me right, and nothing pulled me down.)

I thought the Kraken only happened when you were close to Kerbol. And anyway, it\'s possible.

Szyzyg (Scott Manley, scottish guy) on Youtube orbits Kerbol and re-enters Kerbin SOI no problem, even did a video of him re-entering Kerbin\'s atmosphere at 13000m/s cause he came from a Kerbol orbit.

The only problem with Kerbol orbits is how slow it is. 10000x warp speed isn\'t enough, I suggest Squad make a seperate warp system once you enter Kerbol SoI. But after that, it\'s the software that needs to cope with it.

I wouldn\'t be able though, I can only escape, but I wouldn\'t have the fuel or the knowledge for re-entering Kerbin SoI.
