Generally, I have to say I don´t like the idea of some award thing, as every vehicle posted in the spacecraft exchange has taken lots of work for the builder and is shouldn´t be depreciated by saying: "Yours is unneccessary, ... has made a better one." Every craft is the best the designer could make for his task!

And umm inigma, isn't this basically a repository of craft? We've don that for the 0.24 and below, but I haven't seen one for 0.25 or 0.90.

Trying to avoid that. Perhaps a requirement that you can only recommend craft designed by others with rankings by number of nominations?

I would support the idea of a starter package. This would help the community more than awarding desings.

Personally I liked Scarecrow88´s "Mun for novices" and "Duna for novices" crafts. They are a great thing for new players who are not experienced enough to build their own ships.

It would be cool to have a sort of "starter pack." Easy-to-fly, relatively low part count ships from each category. (Stuff like Rune's White Dart Series or Speeding Mullet's Micro Shuttle.) Then something more like a "Showcase Pack," just to show off some of the stuff that the community builds. (Stuff like zekes' shuttle, inigma's shuttle and assorted bits, Rune's Eagle, Overfloater's planes, maybe Wanderfound's gigantic collection, Rune's Base-In-A-Box, that sort of thing.)

Yup, I also think making a competition is a bad idea... good as any one craft may be, that shouldn't dissuade anyone of posting more, or trying to improve on them. In fact, I think the "showcase of showcases" thread pretty much already fills the purpose you intend for this, already categorized and everything, all without excluding anyone. Granted, there's a lot of stuff in there and a specific thing might not be easy to find... but if someone is looking for ideas, a random jump in the last few pages of each showcase should turn up something good.

That would be another way to go. Still, maintaining those threads is quite the task, either it floods with submissions or it falls to the depths of the forum.

In any case, if some starter pack is called for... how about a showcase of starter ships? That would also fit the bill without excluding anyone or promoting a select few. And of course, half the fun of this game is building your own stuff. Wouldn't want to deprive anyone of that experience!
