Naming Kerbals?

I'm sorry if this has been suggested before. I just searched and found nothing.

Anyways, what if we could name kerbals? Perhaps not changing the last name (because removing "Kerman" would just remove the feeling a little bit, wouldn't it)

Perhaps at the Astronaut Complex, when we look at the list of available crew members, we can double click them and change their names? It would be fun to name everyone "Jebidiah the Second, Third, Fourth and so on.

So what do you guys think?

You can actually rename them on EVA - but this can also change their career stuff, so caution is advised.

(for whatever silly reason, Squad uses the name to determine career, instead of a dedicated 'career' field in the save)

So they have the same name when they re-enter the ship?

I don't recall being able to do when I played last.

While I agree that career from name is silly, there's a little more to it than that.

A kerbal's name appears in several parts of the persistent and quicksave files, so it would be necessary to make sure that every instance of a kerbal's name was changed to void errors which can happen when there are mistakes in the file. But that shouldn't be hard.

I didn't think you could rename them on EVA either, all I knew is that you could rename them straight from the persistence file. I've done that before, to hilarious results.

Yeah, I tried it and I couldn't rename them

I mean, true, it would be nice, but on the same hand it's not really cheating or anything, it's only renaming Kerbals. I'm sure the Board of Directors of the space programs will forgive you for renaming them.
