Skip debris when using [ or ]

Recommended Posts

Sometimes when I am doing randomness near the space station, I find it very annoying to shuffle between 20 pieces of useless debris with [ and ] just to get back to the rover I want to pilot. To fix this, debris should be skipped over when using [ and ] unless the shift key is held down.

Okay, so I want to switch to a piece of debris, so I hold down shift and press `[` and, hey? why is the vessel I just left firing it's engines? Perhaps a different modifier key would be preferable...

Not to say that I don't agree with the basic premise here - I once landed a rover on the Mun with a separable sky-crane. Landed, started the engines running and then separated it so that it could disappear off into space. A very short while later, I accidentally switched to it via the `[` key. Of course, I'd over-estimated how much fuel it needed in the first place so the engines were still running. So I couldn't leave it because it was accelerating. And I couldn't shut it down because it didn't have any control (such as a probe core). So, I had to wait through 30 minutes of game time until the engines finally used up all of the fuel (and it was on an escape course out of the system - I did say I'd overestimated the fuel) before I could switch back to an interesting vessel and carry on actually playing the game.

Perhaps what it switches to could depend on what is selected as enabled to view in the tracking station... i.e. if you have filtered out viewing debris there then pressing [ or ] would skip over those parts.

You could then select what you want to be able to switch between by just changing the filter options in the tracking station, only ships, only Kerbals on EVA, your rover or everything, whatever you like basically. No need for any additional key-press modifiers.

This would be good, but it would work even better if the definition of debris was tweaked a bit. for instance, any craft with kerbals in it don't count as debris even if it's not controllable. Possibly any craft with scientific instruments, although it gets a bit murky there.
