Are the Mk3 parts too heavy in comparison to real life?

The recently overhauled Mk3 parts in KSP are really heavy, and would take about 10 jet engines to even start rolling down the runway, and if I'm correct, the jet engines in KSP are about just as powerful as the ones used currently, and they can thrust a heavy jetliner.

If two turbofans could power conventional jetliners, are the Mk3 parts too big and heavy compared to real life, since two fans could barely make an Mk3 Fuselage move?

They're heavy, yes, but not impossibly heavy.

You can always drain some excess fuel.

On the right there is my Triton SSTO, my best Mk3 creation yet. The station has been built, module by module, by that ship. Unless I'm taking a particularly heavy load, I usually launch with about 50 - 75% fuel.

3 RAPIERs, 2 Turbo-Jets to achieve a 180km x 180km orbit, usually with 500-1000dV remaining.

Took me many many attempts to refine it enough to be able to manage it, but it's well worth it when it works.

And yes, too many intakes is just enough intakes.

The MK3 parts are about the same size as the fuselage of a real-life Boeing 737. For reference, the 737-800 has a MTOW of 79 t, and carries 26,000 liters of fuel. Jet fuel's density is around 0.8 kg/L, so that's about 21 tons of fuel. It uses two engines with a maximum thrust of about 120 kN, giving a TWR of about 0.31 (KSP's basic jet engines should be able to get it in the air just fine). Try building a plane that looks similar to a 737, using crew cabins, and tweak the fuel tanks to give it 21 t of fuel. If it's much over 80 t, than KSP's parts are a bit heavy... compared to a jet airliner.

However, the MK3 parts are really made for spaceplanes, and presumably have a bunch of heat shielding, life support equipment, etc. So they SHOULD be a bit heavier than they would be for an airliner.
