Will We Get a Release Date Prior to Release?

Usually you get to choose one or two (depending on your staff, if they are good you get two, with bad staff or military contracts sometimes you don't get any) from the list of,

1 meet deadline

2 no bugs

3 high quality (fun, with gameplay etc) product

Myself, I'd put priority on 3, followed by 2 then 1.

I'm sure millions of individuals meet deadlines and so forth but the more people you work with/for, the more unavoidable problems you will encounter which will reduce your capacity to deliver all three.

Not licking squaddies boots, just saying it how it is in the real world.

EDIT :

To be honest, all these things you guys have mentioned sound super annoying from the (devs/squads) perspective but its not like people are knocking on their door, bitching/moaning and & criticism seem perfectly suited for a forum. and hey i think paying customers get to do trivial things like moan and ask about release dates.

lol the whole things a little trivial either way, i just thought it was weird they had an actual rule about it, and people seem to be so cautious about it.

Ah, you were not here for the perfect storms about all the tiny issues (Looking at you Dv readout thread, mechjeb thread, delayed release thread etc) that almost literally exploded on the forums leading to very intense discussions where there were very vocal people very passionate about their chosen talking points. It got beyond simple criticism/moaning.

They are the reasons for the 'Look, just don't bring it up, OK?' rules. The last time they got mentioned it was not good. It's better to be nice, anyway.

I really think as its 1.0, KSP should be somewhere in these:

http://www.gamestop.com/collection/upcoming-video-games

http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/release-date/new-releases/all/date

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2015/03/18/2015-video-game-release-schedule.aspx

http://www.pcgamer.com/upcoming-pc-game-releases-spring-2015/

Just having a release date means that the brand(Kerbal Space Program) will appear in all these places. someone can say "huh what is that?" and google it. Boom potential customer.

We truly need a release date.. Maybe Squad can announce the date by the time the update's finished to prevent concerns with time. It will attract customers and prevent KSP from becoming Xbox 1.

EDIT: In all honesty, It's just a bit unfair that every tiny mistake Squad makes, from April fools pranks executed too early all the way to huge and game changing features not being implemented has to be bashed, ranted and criticized upon by everyone, despite Squad trying their best.

Come on, it's their first game, give them a chance. :)

I'm not sure in what world you are living, but I have yet to see a project that will tick all the marks you have mentioned:

- meet deadlines

- no problems

- deliver high quality products

And I'm talking from experience of 10 years working on international multi million (€) projects.

C++? C#? Java? Web/HTML/AJAX/Ruby? CS grads? Contractors? Windows? ITIL? Large groups of programmers? (and for games: DirectX?)

There are reasons why everybody is blowing past deadlines by a factor of five with crappy, unmaintainable products. Or requiring more manpower than the WW2-era US Navy (and still having crappy, unmaintainable products with craptastical error paths and a complete disregard of modularity..but hey, at least Windows 10 will be on time!)

Call me old and disgruntled, but I'm well into my THIRD decade of doing this, and have always hit all three targets in the past, so long as nobody radically changes the design during development.

And have actually had a design during development. Don't forget that.
