Fastest Infiniglider

Recommended Posts

So with the new atmo system not far away I decided that a fitting sendoff for the old system was in order, this sendoff will celebrate one of the best things about the old system.

Infinigliders!

Rules:

-must contain at least one kerbal

-Stock parts only

-No conventional engines active at the time of screenshot

-An escape or landing system must exist to facilitate the survival of the pilot(s).

-A screenshot must be provided showing speed, as well as an image of the recovery system deployed.

Awards:

-Fastest petronator, 1513.8 M/S

-Most parts.

-Fewest parts

-Troop transport(most kerbals)

My entry:

OP Glider (named after another submission from a bygone challenge)

*High throttle is due to cmd,shift,3 being screenshot on a mac.

Ah, yes, the infiniglider. I sure will miss it.

I went back to my original infiniglider, the Pixie Stick. Turns out, landing is kinda hard in one of these. But, with a few modifications (including a cage to prevent terrified Kerbals from escaping, those slippery devils protect the valuable pilot), the Pixie Stick flies again! I got her up to 1513 m/s and landed Mr. Kerman safely afterward.

My pilot seems a little shaken after the experience.

Errordynamics abuse, hmm... I've gotten a few craft to exceed 6 km/s with this. Unfortunately, whenever I build manned versions, I tend to push them to the limits of sanity, which means they don't generally land intact. More likely, I aim them at the mün and make them go splat.

The tricky part is safely landing something where even the slightest twitch significantly increases your speed. Parachutes are one solution, the other is to break off all your winglets like I did.

I'd like to see how you did 6 km/s though. That sounds insane.
