Buran Stock Space Shuttle (WIP)

Recommended Posts

I am trying to make a stock replica of the Soviet's Buran Space Shuttle in KSP. I didn't think it would be hard at first since I can make regular NASA's space shuttles in KSP but I've been struggling with it for hours.

As of now I made this version that works relatively well and can deliver up-to 36t in LKO. I'd like some feedback on how you think the craft flies and what may need improvement.

I didn't want to replicate all the intricate details of the real Buran as it will only add more parts and makes it even harder. But the core concept is very well the same.

Balancing it all out was very hard. I wonder how the real Buran did it? As I don't think the mass of the shuttle and its payload was negligible as to there would be no need for "tilted" engine to compensate for the center of mass being shifted.

Remember to turn RCS On for launch. Perform a roll program and after launch you can enable or the monoprop tanks on the craft.

I tested it without mechjeb and it was actually easier to fly!

Also, out of interest are there any visual mods in there?

There is none, I only installed tools such as RCS Build Aid, Editor Extensions, Mechjeb (Not required for this) and an IVA mod for Mk3 cockpit (Also not required).

So is it american shuttle or soviet Buran? Buran's launcher was Energia rocket. Or did you want to build only Buran?

I was going to build a launcher more like the Energia but it was very hard to get it right plus it would add a lot more parts. But as I explained in the original post it uses the same concept.

I have a tutorial of a NASA style Space Shuttle here:
