Trying to remember an old-school (late 80's) space game...

Hi!

So recently I started remembering an old space game I used to play (I think the first one I ever played!) but I can't, for the life of me, remember the name.

This is what I recall:

It was old enough that it was in a 16-color palette, which makes me think late 80's. early 90's.

Your main view was often from inside the ship, rather than a top-down view.

You had a main mothership thing, which you can fly around to different systems (planets?).

You had a screen where you can repair/upgrade your engine bay, complete with turbines and some other stuff.

You could also launch small, limited-time starfighters to shoot at your enemies, or use your main ship cannons.

I remember there were multiple types of aliens, some peaceful (you could trade with them and buy supplies), some aggressive. One of the enemy "ships" was a giant (flashing?) cube that sends out fighters (I think).

The game manual had a size comparison chart in the back, and the main ship you fly around in is (I think) basically the size of manhatten (or something like that).

The player's main was shaped something like this:

Anybody have any ideas? It was about 20 years ago, so my memory is a bit fuzzy.

If this is too vague, I'll try to remember more details.

Have you tried browsing through a site like http://www.dosgamesarchive.com/ yet?

With a little luck you can even download a full or demo version.

I've spent a fair bit of time this morning on google (and the various sites it's pointed me to) but haven't quite recognized it yet.

I'm thinking it was one the lesser-known games, but I can't say for certain yet.

Edit: It's funny how many other old games I recognize while scrolling through these lists. Oh, the nostalgia...
