1.0 Drop Pod Landing

Recommended Posts

With the new aero system in place, we need more interesting challenges. This challenge entails landing a drop pod on a planet WITHOUT an engine or parachute.

The idea is to use aero brakes or large craft to slow down and land without any help.

Rules:

-Stock Parts

-Planet must have an atmosphere

-No parachutes

-No engines

-No planes/gliders (drop POD, not PLANE!)

-Hyperedit allowed for orbit, not landing.

Win Condition:

-Someone survived the landing

Note: Ejecting (EVA) or having parts explode is O.K.

If you succeed, be sure to post a picture of your pod, and tell us where you landed it.

(Viable options are Kerbin, Laythe, Eve, and Duna)

Example:

Landed at Kerbin at roughly ~19.6m/s

So, is Duna Hard Mode?

Hard, but probably not impossible.

Might require some clever maneuvers.

May need to make a sig badge for Duna pod landings.

As for Moho, fixed.

I haven't been there since it got added, at which point it behaved like it had an atmo. Duely noted.

TYLO is hard mode due to the lack of atmosphere :)

Tylo has a medium-sized flat plane (a lot like Minmus flats, just less minty). If you hit it juuust right maybe it'd be possible to start braking with landing gear without breaking? Assuming the surface doesn't change in 1.0.

I've tried that a couple of times, but it has very narrow margins of error at orbital velocities.

Why are you guys talking about Tylo? Each world has their own difficulty rating things.

Oh I thought of something, how far would you consider something to be labelled a glider?

oops, multipost due to 502 error glitchyness.

If it can gain significant altitude during its descent, it's a glider/plane/not allowed. It should ideally fall fairly straight down. (Excluding initial aerobraking)

Helicopter designs are fine as well.

Is this allowed? http://imgur.com/a/YMnzu I recently discovered Kerbals can survive reentry into Kerbin in 1.0.2 without a capsule after purposely trying to turn Jebediah into a fireball (insert guilty face here). It only takes a bit of EVA pack thrust near the end of the fall (and maybe some luck to land on hilly terrain, although Bob survived the fall onto flat ground when I had to do the same with him after forgetting some parachutes), to successfully land them. They do get a bit warm, but surprisingly do not burn up. Jeb seems to love it, that darn badass!
