1.02 Kollier Trophy (reset for the updates)

Recommended Posts

This competition is all about exploring the limits of KSP 1.02 aerodynamics.

I will maintain a leaderboard for the top 10 performers in altitude and airspeed.

Rules:

-Stock KSP 1.02 parts and physics only.

-No debug menu cheats.

-Reentry heating effects must be a minimum of 100%.

-Air breathing engines only. You may not use rockets/ RCS/ ions during any part of the submitted run.

-No cheats (debug menu, etc.)

-Aircraft must remain intact throughout the run. You do not have to land.

-Record must be recorded in level flight. No zoom climbs or dives to pad your results.

-Please submit a photo of your craft showing you attaining the submitted performance.

*Edit* I am including another category called "Ironman". Rules are the same as above except:

The entry must be manned, and contestant must also include a pic demonstrating safe recovery at KSC after the run.

Good luck!

-Slashy

Hi Slashy,

Great challenge, and I'm almost ready to enter my submission.

Just one question- I've forgot how to view the end of flight statistics screen (other than creating a catastrophic failure). Do you remember how?

Thanks,

The Joker

EDIT: Nevermind, I've got it. Expect my submission soon. :D

Hi Slashy, here's my submission- the Roadrunner 2.

gc737x1.png

Climbing to record-attempt altitude of approximately 10 km above sea level.

yfizqlm.png

The only good picture of the record attempt taking place- the smoke is the vertical stabilizer being incinerated. :0.0:

XzUbtE3.png

Here's a good view from the cockpit of the record attempt. Jebediah's speed indicator reads just over 1 km/s.

oAtkPit.png

Any landing you can walk, I mean, swim away from is a good landing. :P

WfNe7Q0.png

And here's the end of flight statistics.

Roadrunner 2 (The Joker)

Airspeed Record: 1,117 m/s

Altitude Record: 12,146 m

G-Force Record: 13.0 G's

TheJoker,

Congratulations! You are the owner of both records!

During my testing I was able to match that speed and nearly double the altitude, so I know there's a lot more room to shatter records.

Good luck, everyone!

Definitely plenty of room- working on Roadrunner 3 now. :D

Good luck to everyone else!

Hey Slashy,

Two questions:

1) Can I enter a second submission?

2) Is it allowable if the plane separates before the record attempt (i.e. a plane being dropped from another at high altitude?)

Thanks,

The Joker

Joker,

Yes, absolutely you can enter as many submissions as you like.

As for #2, I will tentatively allow it and see where it goes.

Hot tip: The RAPIER is better than the turbo ramjet for this work. I just had one up to 26 km at 1200 m/sec.

Good luck!

So had a quick bash with the FN-1A. Sadly got OS X Graphic Krakened... Not sure what exploded, but it seemed most of the craft was in tact (probably just a superfluous aileron?). Will have to turn all the graphics down to avoid Kraken. Enough tapping, some results!

Put me down for 1,361.8 m/s at 26k.

rBLtlxd.png

So what's working well for me with the FN-1C, is a slow climb to around 15,000m. Somewhere between 15,000 and 20,000 is the sweet spot for lighting 'em up so that you can achieve and maintain a fair lick of speed. Above 26km I think it's a case of moar power? Done several runs and added some heatsink parts.

So with that, I'll put forward 1,602 m/s at 26km (Flight Status can confirm that, but that's such a boring picture....).

My first attempt: I probably could've gone past 1.7K, were it not for me losing control over the craft due to the solar panels exploding.

Rodyle,

Could you resubmit this run with less explosions or maybe pull the solar panels off? I can't accept this run because it violates the "ship must remain intact" rule.

Apologies,

Sure. Working on it as we speak. Removed the solar panels, removed too much fuel, added intercooler and an empty block + 3 rtgs for energy. Going to break 1.7K and I'll be right back.

EDIT: Here it is! Let's call this thing the... ToastRXtreme

EDIT: FlipNascar, I'm sorry for beating your altitude record by 1 metre. It looks really dirty like this.

I have no problem with setting that up, but I will need to know that detail about the submissions.

I will put up an "ironman" division, and entries for that board will have to show proof of their record *and* successful recovery at KSC afterwards. That should definitely increase the difficulty...

Best,

-Slashy

Will we have to land at KSC or is it possible for my previous entry to be submitted to the "ironman" division because he successfully splashed down?

It would require actually landing at KSC. Maybe cruise out West for a bit and then make your speed run heading home? The division's wide- open at the moment.

Alright. I've already got a second submission, the Roadrunner 3.

Roadrunner 3 - The Joker

Highest Altitude Achieved: 28,049m

Highest Speed Over Land: 1,695 m/s (just short of Rodyle's 1,727 m/s)

Highest G's Endured: 6.1 G's

Mine should fit into the ironman division then. It achieved 1481 (F3 says 1482) m/s and then landed successfully at the KSC. I'll get the imgur album set up shortly, but for now a teaser pic:

Lol that looks awesome. It looks like Jebediah can climb in and out of that compartment too!

NAX-1 Ironman run

Final top speed: 1482 m/s according to F3

Final top altitude: 24,259 m

The flight went pretty much as planned, except for a few wings exploding once I got up to speed. It still landed perfectly fine without the missing wings after some fuel re-balancing. Brooke Kerman survived the entire journey, and probably now holds the record for the fastest a kerbal has ever been propelled by airbreathing engines.
