How do I rescue kerbals from orbit?

In 0.9 you intercepted the kerbal, matched speed, switched to the kerbal and it got onto a open kerbalnaut slot in your ship, then you went back to kerbin and recovered vessel.

In 1.0 I intercepted the shipwreck, can't switch. I eva'd my pilot to the shipwreck, can't climb on the cockpit and there's nothing to click on, no "open the hatch to get the rescue target out". Nothing. I can't switch. The mission doesn't say anything, it just says "rescue Matilda"

Matilda is in a M1 Cockpit, my ship is parked next to it and my pilot is literally just outside. What is the next step? How do I perform rescue missions?

Edit- my bad. Because I had reinstalled KSP the keybinding was reset, my Swedish keyboard does not have [ ] keys, I forgot I had to change them again.
