I have now had KSP hang up on me twice. Both happened in the exact moment a component exploded due to overheating and, IIRC, both happened during reentry at high speed and high altitude. This seems intermittent; I have suffered similar explosions under similar circumstances without the game freezing.

Audio continues playing in a loop after the screen freezes. There's nothing out of the ordinary in the log.

KSP 1.0 Steam, Windows 7 64-bit, GeForce GTX 960
