Service Bay

Recommended Posts

I'm puzzled by some odd behavior of science equipment stowed in the new Service Bay. Pilot for the mission was Valentina.

In the first image below, after having landed on Kerbin's Tundra for the first time, I received no science for a temperature scan ... yet the thermometer registered 286.71' (?!?). Neither did I receive any science for the Mystery Goo experiment inside.

In the follow images below, same mission, I wasn't awarded anything for Val's EVA report, and very little for the surface sample she took. Is that because she's not a "Scientist"? This is a Science game I'm playing, not a Career game ... does that matter any?

Are you sure, you haven't taken any tundra samples yet? I think the island airfield near KSC contains at least a little tundra area, maybe you collected some samples there? Especially the small amount you got for the surface sample looks like you collected one before.

Anyway, you can check the science building to see, in which biomes you have done which science experiments.

Yeah there is tundra between shores and grassland everywhere, including a very short distance behind the start of the KSC runway.

I've gathered 6 surface samples so far ... 3 with Jeb, 3 with Val. Something is very weird, as viewing the 6 surface sample reports in the Science Archive says 11.25 science value for Tundra with a remaining 0.02 ... and there's only one surface sample report logged for Tundra. If I had gathered it elsewhere, even without realizing it, she attained something - that last bit should show as a second entry. There's also just one EVA report for Tundra, show all science attained.

Very weird stuff going on, especially with the temperature scans too... notice the temperature scan of the Tundra.

I've got some other tests I'm going to do. If need be, I'll reinstall 1.0 and start over and see if it duplicates.

Okay, so it's maybe a little bit warm for permafrost, but the main thing weird with the temperature is that Squad goofed on the notation :P

All temperature values in the game have been converted into Kelvin in 1.0 (as stated in the patchnotes). However, there are no "degrees Kelvin", there's just Kelvin. It's a unit like Newton or Seconds. So the display of "286.71°" is wrong and in fact implies using a different temperature scale. It should read "286.71 K" or just "286.71" instead.

That temperature, incidentally, is equal to ~13.5°C. Quite warm for permafrost, as stated before, but the thermometer isn't named "2HOT" for nothing... :P Okay, kidding. Unsure whether that's just an oversight or whether residual heat from your vessel (from reentry for example) is actually falsifying the reading.

I've noticed that weird behavior with the 2HOT too, the hottest it has reached was 294, which is 20ish C, in space....

Then during reentry and splashdown, the temperature was closer to 0 C. (i'm talking equator water here)

so if the Permafrost is warmer than ocean water....

We're in the Twilight Zone

The problem, I suspect, is the Service Bay. It should be protecting the instruments. I've got a test I'm going to run as soon as I'm done here, will post it later.

omg brilliant.

i forgot that particular detail...

i suspect the bay protects stuff inside regardless if it's open or closed.
