fairings are in the "aerodynamics" parts in the VAB. Their image in the list looks like a nosecone. In career/science mode, you unlock the fairings theough the aerodynamic/jet nodes.

I think some basic faring should be at beginning.

PS i did not play KSP since long time, now i even have problem with launching craft into orbit :-(

Can you tell me what i make wrong?
