broken part occlusion with fairings and cargo bays --> please fix this ASAP!

Recommended Posts

This is happening: I build an inline fairing with a decoupler on top. I deploy the decoupler. The fairing stays intact and is now basically a "bucket". I want to get the payload straight out of there. I can't because the engine says "can't activate while stowed". Even after I pull it out (RCS works, btw) with another craft, I STILL CAN'T ACTIVATE THE ENGINE! Unless the fairing is deployed, anything that was inside will believe it is still there.

Maybe this is the same issue as the "Manleybug", but it makes a whole lot of design ideas (Apollo recreation for instance) useless.

My suggestion:

  • Fix the occlusion --> parts outside a bay / fairing have to be "free"
  • Let us activate engines inside a cargo bay! (Because they work when you open the bay, fire the engine and then close the bay again)

Thank you for your attention.

What happens if you stage/activate the fairing first, before the decoupler? Or both fairing and decoupler at the same time?

It does sound like there's probably something needing looked at, but the above 2 cases might have a workaround for now. It's unclear from your description if/when you're activating the fairing. I'd guess it might be impossible to activate if you separate it from command pod/probe before trying to activate it, so is there something with command authority on the section with the fairing?.

Activating fairing before activation decoupler: engine works.

Activating decoupler/fairing at the same time: engine works.

Activating fairing after decoupler: will test later

Destroying / recovering vehicle after decoupling to see if occlusion state changes: will test later

Well my issue is a two part problem. One is the bug (engine not activating outside of fairing), the other is the genereal suggestion that engines should be able to engage inside fairings / cargo bays which are disabled by design of that occlusion mechanism.

I just now found out there is a dedicated bugtracker... that information was hidden very well :P
