Contacts working as intended? Manned - unmanned

I am working through some of the "worlds first" contracts and have noticed that some seem to work with probes and some don't.

For example I was able to complete the "mun flyby" mission with a probe, but was unable to complete the "return vessel from mun flyby" mission with a probe. Do some missions have to be manned? If so it seems a bit random which missions can be completed by a probe and doesn't mention crew in the mission brief.

I don't think those contracts are tied to the manned/unmanned status like that. Although the trip log is stored in the pod/core, so I think that part needs to survive.
