1.0.1 breaks part picker in SPH/VAB - Updated w/ repro steps

Recommended Posts

KSP Version: v1.0.2 32-bit on Windows 64-bit

What Happens: Stack attachment gets borked.

Mods / Add-Ons: All Stock

Steps to Replicate:

1) Start with MK1 Cockpit [1].

2) Add MK1 Liquid Fuel Fuselage behind it [2].

3) Attach another MK1 Liquid Fuel Fuselage radially to Cockpit [3].

4) Attach yet another MK1 Liquid Fuel Fuselage [4] to the last one [3].

You should see something like this:

kerbal_att_1.jpg

5) Re-attach [3] radially to [2].

kerbal_att_2.jpg

6) Try to re-attach [4] in front of [3] (not radially).

kerbal_att_3.jpg

Result: As above.

(this is mostly related to #4 post, not #1)

[edit] OK, I tried those steps again and it worked. I had to set the camera at right angle, but it worked. I once had something like this without ANY way to normally re-attach some parts, I had to make new from part picker, because those already on scene for some reason did not work. Sorry, but I don't know what caused that.

well,that's good news. means it's a corrupt save. if folks move those off and start withou them... might tell us something.

It is not a corrupt save, as after the issue self-resolved I was able to load up my save and continue with my old ships as normal. It also did not respond to new saves before that day.

I remember having a similar bug when loading certain ships in KSP 0.90.0 (Windows x64) before I abandoned it favour of the 32-bit version. The Pods tab and the majority of parts in the part list would disappear. However I had no issue in the 32-bit version, even with the same ships in the same save file. But since there is no 64-bit version now, that can't be the issue.

That wasn't very helpful, was it?

Guys, I'm sorry, but I give up.

What I found:

In the save file, I had this section:

    SCENARIO
{
name = ResourceScenario
scene = 5, 7, 6
RESOURCE_SETTINGS
{
GameSeed = 1883583565
MaxDeltaTime = 21600
PLANET_SCAN_DATA
{
PlanetId = 1
}
PLANET_SCAN_DATA
{
PlanetId = 2
}
}
}

When I deleted both PLANET_SCAN_DATA with its bracketed contents (PlanetId = n), it worked. No more disapperaring part picker menu.

But it was a modded sandbox game. Mods: MechJeb, KerbalEngineer, USI Life Support, Kerbal inventory System, Exploration Pack, Karbonite, KarbonitePlus, MKS, Freight Transport, Exploration Pack.

So it seems to me like when reverting to VAB something takes longer than it is supposed to (probably somehow connected with resources), and the part picker menu rendering just gives up.

I really don't know. Spent a few hours editting save files, I guess I'm stuck in dead end.

So conclusion of my case:

- sandbox, other modes not tested

- mods needed (listed above, probably not all needed)

- fresh install, fresh persistent save file

- add the PLANET_SCAN_DATA sections

- launch a simple ship (probe core, tank, Reliant engine)

- part picker not appearing some 50-80% of times when reverting to VAB. Can take some 5-10 reverts for the bug to show. You dont have to fly the ship - it is ok to click Launch in VAB, then wait for the ship to appear on the launch pad, then Esc and revert to VAB.

My PC config: Intel Core i5-4570, 16GB RAM, GeForce GTX 760 4GB. Windows 7 64bit. KSP 32bit of course, Steam installed, versions 1.0, 1.0.1, 1.0.2

From now on I will be posting only to the "modded" thread of the same bug:

http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/117613-After-reverting-to-SPH-VAB-the-parts-don-t-show-%28

Unless I find this bug in my unmodded fresh install.

Update: After deleting the new career save the bug reappeared, creating another career save made the bug go away again. So it does seem to be save related after all, but one save is affecting the other somehow.

Update: Alright, I seem to have figured it out. I was poking around in my save file to see if I could see anything suspicious like HighSpeedSteel. I found a scenario section "CustomWaypoints". This seems to be added by the Inflight Waypoints aka Waypoint Manager mod. I could swear I had a clean install but I seem to have messed something up doing that, my bad. Anyway, installing the mod did indeed break my other save as well. So it is mod related after all. Going by what HighSpeedSteel found I'm guessing that the 1.0.1 update caused something to mess up with non-standard sections in the savefile. It also seems that having at least one save file without the offending sections and loading those clears up the issue for that session.

In conclusion. Here are the REPRO STEPS:

- Start a new game on a clean install of KSP.

- Quit and install Waypoint Manager.

- Resume the game and go to either the VAB or the SPH.

It is possible that other mods cause the same issue by adding their custom section to the savefile as well.

I had this bug too, i discovered that was caused by deleting module manager, after restoring module manager and his files in the Gamedata folder the bug dissapeared.

Guys, do not use -popupwindow or -force-opengl, they are unreliable and will break KSP.

Also delete your settings.cfg, 0.90.0 settings can break 1.0

Some craft can be bugged and cause this, try a new craft and a new save.

I use -force-opengl to keep the memory from ballooning past 3gb on startup because thats what happens if I don't use it.

Also, what's the workaround to fix this? I'd really like this bug gone.
