Fuel flow problems

I have been experimenting with a rocket launched from a plane recently and got it to fly quite well but I then noticed that for some reason the plane was draining the fuel from the payload first which meant when I was ready to release the payload it had very little fuel left. I have tried rebuilding the payload, changing the separater for a decoupler and a docking port, altering the fuel lines, exchanging the payload for a fuel tank and even building an entirely new plane but nothing has made any difference. Has anyone got any suggestion on how to get the plane to work without using the fuel from the payload.

Make some part in the payload the root part and it will drain from the plane's tanks first, the fuel flow logic is mistaking your payload for a drop tank. See this thread for a more thorough explanation of what is happening.

You can always just disable the payload's tank until you're ready to release it.
