The "Permanent Committee of the Egyptian Antiquities" has approved a project to rebuild one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. All thats left now is for Alexandria's regional government to also approve the project, according to Dr Mostafa Amin, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.

The Original Lighthouse was an estimated 393–450 ft (120–137 m) tall, and was one of the tallest man-made structures for hundreds of years.

I for one think this is awesome. Many sites list the project as a "replica" so I believe the plan is to be pretty historically accurate. I can't wait to hear more on this.

Only true if you believe the pyramids to not be 'man-made structures'.

I thought about that and visited wikipedia, they have a section about this sort of.

Meaning of "building"

The earliest structures now known to be the tallest in the world were the Egyptian pyramids, with the Great Pyramid of Giza, at an original height of 146.5 metres (481 ft), being the tallest man–made structure in the world for over 3,800 years, until the construction of Lincoln Cathedral in 1300. From then until the completion of the Washington Monument (capped in 1884) the world's tallest buildings were churches or cathedrals. Later, the Eiffel Tower and, still later, some radio masts and television towers were the world's tallest structures.

However, though all of these are structures, some are not buildings in the sense of being regularly inhabited or occupied. It is in this sense of being regularly inhabited or occupied that the term "building" is generally understood to mean when determining what is the world's tallest building. The non-profit international organization Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), which maintains a set of criteria for determining the height of tall buildings, defines "building" as "structure that is designed for residential, business or manufacturing purposes" that "has floors".

Tall churches and cathedrals occupy a middle ground: their lower areas are regularly occupied, but much of their height is in bell towers and spires which aren't. Whether a church or cathedral is a "building" or merely a "structure" for the purposes of determining the title of "world's tallest building" is a subjective matter of definition.

:P :P :P :P maybe you are right, maybe I am, still really cool that this is happening.

Will they be using the original techniques?

I know nothing else other than what I've shared here. A metal sub-structure with a look-alike facade would still be cool I suppose, but an accurate construction would be most awesome.

then again the original was rather suceptable to earthquakes so who knows?

Just for argument, the word used was 'structure', not 'building', and probably solid blocks of stacked stones are a structure.

But this is really neat. It seems somewhat similar to the previously remade Library of Alexandria, of course, that was defenitly not a replica of the original. My main concern wouldbe the fact that it remains on the original site. I suppose they shall probably be careful about excavating and not destroying.

It's still really awesome that they're doing a replica, but I wonder if it's really a good time for Egypt to commit to something so... Frivolous?

At least it won't have billboards of Zahi Hawass plastered all over it.

I retorted without even reading my own statement  well played.

As for being on the original site, I should hope some proper excavation would occur, if it has not already. I know that some of the original is still in the sea, just next to the site, and most of the rubble from the original was dragged off to help construct a fortress.

That sounds like a great idea

JK. But I do wonder where the financing will come from. It might be split between egypt and the city Alexandria itself?

I'll update this thread when more information is released.
