Engine Jettison?

Hi,

I just stumbled upon an action on the LV-909 (haven't checked other engines yet) which is called Jettison. And it does nothing when binding to an Action Group. So what is it for?

Yeah, it has been there a while but I don't know what it does.

It may be related to the shroud that appears when you place another part under the engine.

I think so too but the shroud jettisons when you decouple the part under it any way.

Just tried with a shroud, nothing happens. Maybe a left over from the automatic shroud jettison there.

All the engines seem to have it, only the LV-N one is useful. It's basically a fairing but looks cool. I made this:

In action groups, you will see 2 jettisons, one for each side

It's mostly a hold over functionality for when fairings came off in a slightly different manner. There is still a setting for the fairing in the part.cfg file which will make the fairing stick to the engine instead of a decoupler. In which case, you would need to jettison it. (Although in that instance, they also self jettison when staging the engine.)
