A bit more immersing chute failure.

Recommended Posts

What we have now works gameplay-wise, but it doesn't feel right. Looks like some people don't even understand what's happening - it feels like a dirty hotfix.

What I suggest is to just add a g-spike and a violent camera shake. Craft should actually lose some velocity - if there are forces that destroyed the chute, you should feel them.

I'm not convinced there would actually be much shock felt in the capsule. The circumstances we're talking about are so vastly beyond the strength and heat capacity of the parachute material, that I believe it would almost instantly shred or vaporise, before it could transmit much shock load. I'm speaking from some experience here, having shredded very large sails made from parachute material, they just go instantly when you exceed max load (but you do get recoil shock in that situation, as it was typically under sustained max load before it shredded). Subject normal modern parachute cloth to extreme heat, and it will just vaporise rapidly. The only way I see the capsule experiencing shock is if it was under significant load for some time before being destroyed.

Thank you for that piece of information, Murph, but, uh... That might be a subject of The Coconut Effect. Basically, it would feel more realistic even if that's not what's going to happen IRL. And it won't be exposed to hypersonic flow, at least initially, since it would be somewhat shielded by the craft, so, I can't really imagine what would happen...

Same with engine exhaust. Yes, IRL in space it does look like a pancake. However, everyone expects it to look like a cone.

(Psssst : it IS a hotfix)

But yeah, 100% agreed. I was showing ksp to a friend earlier today, he was playing and he opened the chutes at 600m/s ;

At first he didnt even understand what was going on, until he read the "chute was ripped off" message, and at this point, no player will feel panic, stress, and the need to save the kerbals in another way ! When you read the message and the chute just disappears, you are simply disappointed and revert...

It could definitely use a burning/ripping effect, some camera shake and a IVA warning (like light turning red inside the capsule, emergency mode or so)
