Any KSP 1.0/1.02 shuttle construction tutorials?

Recommended Posts

So, I finally got around to trying to do shuttle stuff with KSP 1.02 (hadn't done any since beta).

Unsurprisingly, everything I knew is now wrong and useless. :)

I've poked around a bit but haven't had much luck with my google-fu, anyone know if any good shuttle guides (especially launch profiles) for KSP1.02 ?

The main thing that has remained true is that shuttle designs are hard to make, very hard to fly and easily out-performed by other approaches. Better to make a SSTO - vertical launch or spaceplane - unless your sole objective is appearance.

I'm sure there are some on YouTube, or at least there will be eventually. The basics of shuttles haven't changed too much from 0.90, keep your thrust centred with your mass, etc., but the new aerodynamics will make things funkier when launching or trying to land.

I suggest you do what Scott Manley does in this video:

. Don't follow his build instructions, but simply experiment to find the best design which glides well (or semi-well, the real Space Shuttle flew like a brick, apparently), and progress from there to putting it on a launcher stack.

I' ve made one, however, I had to tweak the gimbal range on the Mainsail. It can deliver Orange+gray tank into orbit. Combined with StageRecovery, launch costs just 50,000 funds, and it flies like a brick!

Feel free to PM me if you need any help ;)

I've gotten good so far at making designs that fly/glide well - the problem is mostly in launching.

(designing/placing external boosters/tanks, vertical ascent profile, etc)
