I never had any problem with these service bays until today. As far as I can tell, they are perfectly safe unless you put anything into the path where the door swings.

It would probably be better if the door just refused to open rather than allowing the service bay to blow the whole ship apart.

Heh, got krakened last night with the smaller service bay on a probe a few times. Unfortunately, I couldn't see the issue because the entire upper section of the rocket was under fairings. 11k up, I start making a gentle turn and BOOM. Service bay has collided with fairing. Every time. The fairing was 2.5m, and the bay 1.25m - that's quite a jump.

Yeah, when I was first experimenting with the fairings I had big chunks of my payload swaying right through the fairings during the rougher parts of the launch. Once I installed Kerbal Joint Reinforcement, that stuff all stopped.
