Mun doesn't want me to do rescues

Recommended Posts

OK I have a high Kerbin orbit rescue mission, and it's outside the orbit of Mun, with a slight nonzero inclination (to be more precise, Ap~20Mm, Pe~15Mm, Inc 8.3 deg).

Now, it just so happened that my regular Hohmann transfer will bump into Mun's SoI and it completely screws things up (because of the nonzero inclination)... my rescue ship is now just parking at LKO. Rescue contract deadline isn't approaching but I still would love to finish it as early as possible.

Now, do I have any better option other than waiting until Mun goes out of the way? I still have plenty of dV left (3k+) and willing to spend that.

Answer: I seem overlooked the fact that I don't need to wait that long for Mun to get out of its way - so I'll just wait.

It's not impossible to do something else, like establish on a higher orbit first, but alternatives may well take even longer in game days. Just wait on the Mun getting out of the way, it's far easier to do that, and shouldn't take that long.

Are you doing your Hohmann transfer in Kerbin's equatorial plane or inclined? Depending on how far out the rescue orbit is, 8 degree inclination might leave you far enough from Mun to not perturb your orbit too badly.

I would think 3K of ∆v should be enough to correct course after the flyby.

Mun orbits fast enough that waiting for the next window is probably your best bet, though.

I already match to the target ship inclination so I'm having a 8.3 deg inclination with Mun.

And unfortunately Mun just happened to be around AN/DN node so I get the encounter but inclination would screw me.

And I guess you guys are probably right... Mun semi-major axis is 12Mm while my target ship is 18Mm, that means the target ship orbit period is about 1.8 Munar month... Looks like I just need a couple of days.
