KSP hardcore bug

Recommended Posts

aaaand again:

build id = 00842

2015.05.01 at 21:02:12 CEST

Branch: master

Win 7 Ultimate 64bit, 8GB Ram

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570

Got a rather large spacecraft on a trajectory from Duna to Kerbin, currently orbiting the Sun. Since it'll take it a while to get to Kerbin I figured let's do some smaller Missions in between.

Got me another Spacecraft to recover a capsule from kerbins high orbit, works out fine.

Now, I wanted to check in on earlier mentioned spacecraft. I get this:

Trying to get back to the Space Center, I get this:

restarting KSP does no good, since KSP just went and DELETED my spacecraft orbiting the sun.

(Which is rather uncomfortable, since it got loads of Science and a crew of 6 high-trained Kerbals)

Update: my spacecraft "Enforcer" is now also missing in a previous savegame, though it should be there. Seems like I lost it and the crew forever...

That's a Hell Kraken attack. It happens when your velocity is Not a Number, often due to an EVA kerbonaut hitting a planet or moon at high speed. The game tries to tell where your kerbal is going, sees "potato m/s" and dies. The NaN WILL propagate if you manage to interact with NaNed objects, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_floating_point#Exception_handling) so it's normally safest to consider the save devoured by the Kraken. You might be able to manually edit the save file to ensure every object has valid parameters, but the game will delete affected ships/kerbals/etc in an attempt to prevent the spread.

Jebretary is a good program to automatically keep backups of your saves, so that in the event of a kraken attack you can revert to a safe state.
