Detailed Terraforming Visualizations

Recommended Posts

Very cool video. Very bad music lol. Sadly terraforming Mars will never be viable. By time we have the technology to do what you see in that video we will have much better options for a new place to live. Mars has little to no magnetic field. There'd nothing we can do about that even WITH that technology. We'd need to build a massive dynomo otherwise any attempt to thicken the atmosphere gets blown away by the sun.

Now I said terraforming won't be viable. You'll never be able to stand on the surface without a breather in shorts and a tshirt. But living on Mars in biodomes/under ground I can see. We eventually won't have a choice. Once our sun starts to heat up and cook the Earth we have to find a new home. So as the goldilocks zone of our system gets pushed back we will follow it. Assuming we haven't figured out interstellar travel by then. In which case were screwed.

Mars is not a solution, in the case of our sun turning into a gas giant, mars would be a band aid to fix an aortic aneurism.

Oh, i don't know - drop several hundreds of comets on Mars, and you will have nice amount of volatiles for the next couple hundreds of thousands years to come. Besides - in about 10 000 of years we went from cave dwellings and hunter-gatherer lifestyle to nuclear power and space exploration - who can say what we'll have at our disposal 10 000 years from now?

The atmosphere would get blown away over millions of years...

Things like Bernal Spheres and Oneill Cylinders are more practical than terraforming any day.

I agree that space habitats are more practical but IF you have the resources to terraform mars, you will also have the resources to 'top off' the atmosphere every few thousand years...

Exactly. If you can terraform Mars, you can keep it that way.
