Blender

Pros: free, easy to setup keyboard shortcuts. Also combines polymodeling, 2d and 3d projection painting and sculpting into one software. Has a lot of good modifiers. Not very buggy. There are plugins available spesifically for working with ksp.

Cons: A bit messy viewport shader(difficult to see exactly whats going on), no modifier gizmos, texture baking is missing tons of features. Use in conjunction with xnormal etc. Requires tons of plugins to compete with the polymodeling tools in 3dsmax/maya.

3dsMax

Pros: very good viewport shader(easy to see whats going on) modifier gizmos and good texture baking with cage support. Lots of great modifiers and tools. Extra plus for the lovely symmetry modifier. The "king" of hard surface modeling software:P

Cons: expensive to buy if youre planning on making money modeling(but free full featured student version

Available). 2016 version is VERY buggy. Hard to setup keyboard shortcuts. No good sculpting tools(mainly conform tools for retopologizing meshes from zbrush etc.) No integrated texture editor. Youll be doing all that in photoshop/zbrush. Ui takes a bit more getting used to...atleast for a former blender user
