Rocket breaks apart on time warp

Recommended Posts

No, this isn't my other problem, this is a completely new rocket, which I have pretty much flown before many times (all I've added is a fuel tank and changed the way things separate), when I do a normal time warp it suddenly breaks apart. It gains a massive torque and completely flies apart. Usually leaving the probe and parachute flying off at a constant speed away from Kerbin.

Here is the craft: http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=07989745302126851392

Video coming soon.

Thanks in advance. I'm having a terrible day on KSP :(

Instead of craft file a few pictures would be nice first to see atleast what we are dealing with. Oh and if this rocket of yours is using claws like on your rovers it might cause problems when you open the claw if there is anything close to the claws they will be pushed and destroy the whole craft.

It contains a claw but this is just after leaving the atmosphere having never even used the claw.

Ok here's a picture of it while I'm uploading the video:

I'd like to make it clear that this is a different kind of unplanned disassembly. Here, everything torques and spins apart relatively gently, the other was a spontaneous explosion. Nothing really explodes here.

Ahh this bug. Seen it before happened to me too yet couldn't find a way way to fix it. Well a new rocket always fixes it i guess. Also am i seeing wrong or that part looks clipped with the parachute just a bit?

Oh it might be! I'll have a look now.

Do I need to post this bug, if so how?

Is there anything I can do to get back to just before launch? I only have a quicksave in this situation. :(

I unfortunately can't replicate the "flying apart" bit from your flight, so I've just got some comments on the rocket design:

  • There are Mk3-to-2.5m adapters which double as fuel tanks... maybe use 'em instead of the 3.75m-to-2.5m adapters?
  • Fuel cell is unnecessary unless you plan on retrieving parts from, say, Jool.
  • Action groups? For e.g. solar panels?
  • You dump the Poodle but not the X200-16 fuel tank it feeds from?
  • Sepratrons can lose two-thirds of their fuel.
  • I think you're short on parachutes. Maybe stow the probe core inside the cargo bay (beside the Klaw) and replace the sub-1.25m stuff with a Mk16-XL?
  • No torque, reliant on RCS for attitude control.
  • Mainsail stage has a little too much fuel if it's discarded just before LKO. Maybe lose the X200-16 and move its fuel to the Poodle stage (using the Mk3-to-2.5m adapter tanks).

You could just not timewarp? It seems to not fly apart until you actually timewarp, so don't do that, and fly your mission. Maybe it won't fly apart if you timewarp after you dump the Mainsail.

Ahhh! Of course, why hadn't I done that? Thanks!

Fuel cell is unnecessary unless you plan on retrieving parts from, say, Jool.

Well it's a probe spacecraft and I sometimes run out of power behind bodies like Kerbin. Maybe I should just add a battery, but I also wanted to try the fuel cell out for the first time.

Action groups? For e.g. solar panels?

I've had problems with this. Often I make the action group and then in flight it only moves one panel. I'd stopped caring :/

You dump the Poodle but not the X200-16 fuel tank it feeds from?

This is because a heat shield is above it, and I can recover the tank + fuel if not used (funds! :) )

Sepratrons can lose two-thirds of their fuel.

Definitely, I keep forgetting to change this.

I think you're short on parachutes. Maybe stow the probe core inside the cargo bay (beside the Klaw) and replace the sub-1.25m stuff with a Mk16-XL?

I know I'm a little short on parachutes, I another 4 would be safe, this configuration was new - they all used to be at the top - so I was guessing (badly).

No torque, reliant on RCS for attitude control.

I find reaction wheels unrealistic except for small probes.

Mainsail stage has a little too much fuel if it's discarded just before LKO. Maybe lose the X200-16 and move its fuel to the Poodle stage (using the Mk3-to-2.5m adapter tanks).

Not really, if it helps me get to the Mun then why not?

You could just not timewarp? It seems to not fly apart until you actually timewarp, so don't do that, and fly your mission. Maybe it won't fly apart if you timewarp after you dump the Mainsail.

Dumping the Mainsail doesn't help, and I'm going to the Mun, which takes many hours...

"Have you tried turning it off and on again?"

So I turned on KSP and it's happy again... hmmm.
