SAS surface reference

Recommended Posts

Let me explain:

When you are flying a plane in Kerbin you must redirect your craft every time. This happens because SAS doesn't take the navball surface reference but rather the orbital reference. I say if you engage SAS with any rocket/plane with Surface velocity reference, SAS should have a reference of surface and will recorrect the way where the plane is pointing at the same time you are flying and the navball is spinning slowly.

I think this it's a necessary feature for future updates. What do you think?

Click on the Navball text that says orbit and the reference will switch to surface.

But the automatic change in a certain height can indeed be anoying. Perhaps a possibility to turn this off would be nice.

Doesn't do anything for the default SAS mode (stability) which is the only stock one that could be of any use for planes (but isn't because it will constantly increase pitch). It's the reason I added a surface SAS module to Pilot Assistant. Stock SAS and planes just don't mix well.

I'm going to say it in every thread it comes up: trim (mod+WASDQE) should be your go-to method of setting neutral attitude while flying aircraft. SAS has more problems than "follows the global direction" thing when it comes to aircraft. Like exacerbating short-mode oscillations and shaking your finely-tuned airplane to pieces.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
