Delta IV Heavy/Orion EFT-1 Replica (With launch tower)

Recommended Posts

Probably one of the most powerful rockets to have ever been built (Other than the Saturn V), the Delta IV is well-known for the Orion EFT-1 mission which it took place as a launcher. It has sent up many other payloads (notably for the military) ever since its debut launch in 2004.

It's very stable and rather simple to control, especially with SAS on (For some odd reason.)

It comes in two versions - it's conventional layout (Fill it with a payload of your choice), or an Orion EFT-1 attached on it (Different fairings, different payloads.)

Delta IV Heavy - Conventional

With a normal layout and conventional fairings, this doesn't come with a payload, although it can be flown as is.

It should be able to take up to 7.5 tons without modifications to the launcher itself. Be careful though - Without payload, it's slightly wobbly!

As a test, let's launch it with a tiny fuel tank to LKO.

Delta IV - Orion EFT-1

This version is based on the Orion EFT-1 Delta IV and payload, which is rather different. Although slightly more stable, it needs a very precise ascent.

Tell me as soon as possible if any link is broken, and I'll proceed to make a new one.

Launch Profile, Action Groups and Operation:

Launch Profile - mileage may vary:

Keep SAS on - Launch straight up until 2,000 m, or whatever you feel is most efficient.

At that altitude, start slowly leaning toward the "22.5" mark.

By 5,000 m, you should be halfway to 45 degrees in the navball.

And by 10,000, you should be at 45 degrees already - Continue until the stage runs out.

If you're aiming for a rather low altitude, you may want to increase your turn even more, but otherwise - burn until desired altitude.

As usual, an insertion burn should send you into orbit.

EFT-1 Users, don't decouple your Cryogenic Upper Stage - You'll need that to deorbit!

Action Groups -

The majority of the functions are equipped in the staging, so not much -

Orion EFT-1 Users - Abort triggers the fairings, and ignites the LES - The sequence for aborting.

Custom01 - Toggles the Cryogenic Upper Stage.

Custom02 - Separates main CM from the rest of the craft.

More notes:

As mentioned multiple times, this is working for 1.0.2. I'll keep updating it as much as possible.

If you'd want a Delta IV payload for me to engineer (or perhaps another variant), just drop a PM by and I'll work on it as soon as I can -

Or if you'd like, make your own, and I'd be more than happy to add it to the OP and credit you :)

If you have any suggestions or comments, I'd be more than happy as well to help troubleshoot, or implement them as well. I'm open to criticism. :)

Thanks for viewing! Have fun flying :D

Work-In-Progress:

Action Groups

-Adding one for "parachutes"

-Fairing Separation

-Redoing "Abort" Sequence - Currently it is rather risky.

Assemblies:

-Delta IV "Medium" Version.

-Subassembly Satellites, possibly available in full .zip file.

Miscellaneous:

-Further make ship more aerodynamic.

-Possibly test with FAR.

-Change to 3.75m instead of 2.5 (<A big maybe.)

For the abort sequence take the BPC and attach it to the top of the ICPS, that should allow you to abort with the fairing on. Then for the second part of the sequence detach fairings and escape tower at the same time. It's the only way I've got it to work on my SLS.
