I recently installed W10 on my older laptop, and I have to say, I'm not pleased with the performance (nor with having to do two installs). While the GUI bits seem responsive, it takes a good deal longer to boot than W7 or XP did, and logging in takes forever (even though it's a local account). Heating was significantly worse under W10 than it's predecessors. GDI performance was just as bad as under W7 (although not as bad as Vista).

KSP performance was roughly the same as under the other two Windows installs it historically had.

Also, system administration has been a part of my job description on and off for the last two decades, and the 'free' version has some pretty massive TCO issues. I had to wipe the XP install to put in Windows 7 so it could be "upgraded", and that was a major pain as the Win7 install ended up with that flaky Windows Update issue, so I then had to download the ISO separately, 'burn' it onto a USB stick (which took another forever and a half as it refused to actually do the burn until I redid the USB stick using diskpart(a major what-the-frack moment)) using that cruddy "Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool".

Contrast this with a typical Linux distro (Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, etc), where you simply 'burn' the ISO file to a USB stick using /bin/dd or Win32DiskImager or such and you're off to the races.

So, out of a scale of five charlie-foxtrots, where a Samba config file is a one, and the Windows Registry is about a five-point-two, I'd give Windows 10 about a three. Given that it cost me about $450 worth of administration time, I'm going to give this mediocre pile of crap a pass. They'll have to do better than 'free' to get my business.
