Kamikazee Astroids

Recommended Posts

I'm full of questions today. I have not done much with Asteroids, and the couple I had basically passed through Kerbin's SOI. So it was a matter of matching planes, then burning out to try and meet them at their Pe.

But now I have one that is on a collision course with Kerbin, so the Pe will be a bit too late to redirect. I'm guessing the method in this case is to get into a highly elliptical orbit so that your return side of the orbit parallel's the asteroids path and you can capture it as it is inbound?

If you're flying a ship when the asteroid reaches Kerbin, it will simply be removed upon getting below 25km altitude as any other craft would be that isn't close enough to you for physics simulation. If you're at the space center, it will hit the surface and be removed. Asteroid impacts don't actually do anything in the game, unfortunately. So, there's no actual need to redirect it. But, it's a fun mission.

I noticed an asteroid was suddenly in a long, closed orbit around Kerbin and coming in for an impact. It was out by Minmus orbit. I sent a ship to intercept it on its way down, and was able to modify it's Pe enough to avoid impact. I also lowered its Ap with my remaining fuel when it got close. I plan to send another mission to it to try and pull it into a circular orbit so I can mine it and get science, and so Kerbin can have a little buddy.
