Parachute

Recommended Posts

Coming back from the Mun, this was the smoothest re-entry possible : Pe at 40 and did 3 passes. At the third pass my Pe dropped into the ground and i was left with a ballistic trajectory and less than 2000m/s relative to surface.

AAAAAAND my parachute was destroyed due to heating effects even though i hadn't deployed it yet. here's a pic (didn't take the screenshot in time to show the message but it's basically this) :

I even have a heatshield on this ! WHY is this a thing ? What am i supposed to do in order to avoid that ? This is the simplest craft ever ! My whole mission is doomed

The capsule and its heatsink can take quite a bit of heat (2400K)

The parachute burns up at 2000.

By spending so much time gaining heat, in a vehicle that has no good way of losing heat rapidly, you effectively baked your pod on medium roast for 2 hours.

The pod came out well, but the parachute is extra crispy.

look at that antenna of yours. It is also about to blow, as it has about the same heat tolerance as the parachute.

Contrary to intuition, the best reentry for a pod that *has* an ablative shield, is to dive in at about 5-10 degrees from the horizontal.

The shield will take a lot of punishment, but that's what is is there for.

Turns out I'm retarded and my staging was wrong. It seems that the parachute opened in space before anything happened. That light blue tho (yes i'm trying to find excuses :D ) Feel free to close that thread

Huh. So there is actually a too shallow reentry? When though it makes sense the way you out it, it hadn't really occurred to me before.
