If you want to try Infernal Robotics be sure to check out the model rework parts. They have a very nice look and feel to them.

They can be found here:

Be warned a few of the parts DO NOT work just yet as the creator is, I believe, still waiting on a few dependancies to update.

That being said, in my experience with them it is just the robo-struts and the surface sampler that don't work yet. All other parts work fine for me.

I you decide to recreate the arm so that it can "walk" as it does in real life, don't forget you power gen(RTGs) or probe core.

Happy building. :)

Actually I wasn't planning to use it to capture docking crafts. Was intending to have a ladder on it for my Kerbal to grab onto, and then to move him all around the ship while builds using KIS.

I'm afraid there is no way to anchor a Kerbal to a part without the Kerbal going ragdoll (as with the Claw). This turns out to be a really bad idea even with the Claw, as the Kraken has a difficult time resisting a Kerbal on a hook and line dangling out there waiting to be snatched up.

would that still be a problem if you used an arm to place a ladder near a work area and then used the jetpack to bring the Kerbal to the ladder? It seems to me it would be just as handy to be able to anchor a Kerbal while he's working, even if you can't move him with the arm.

You could try it, but Kerbals on ladders are already finicky enough. It might work though, especially in 1.0 since they fixed a lot of problems with it.
