Orange Jackets

I have four Kerbals with orange jackets but I have other who seem equally qualified. How does one get an orange jacket and what does it signify?

Obviously not a mission critical question.

The original three four. That's all.

The orange suits are exclusive to the core named characters, the first Kerbals to go into space. No Kerbal you rescue or hire can get one. (Even though in career mode, all of them can be trained up and become equally skilled. The orange suit is like an honorary award.)

The three original Kerbals (Jeb, Bob and Bill) had orange suits, all subsequently added kerbonauts had white. They kept the original three with orange for historical reasons, you know, they were the first. When Valentina was added some people freaked out about "equality" so Val got an orange suit as well.

There's no other particular significance about it.

Note also that they don't actually get to wear them in-game. Your EVA suits are white, always.

True... but you IVA suits are the appropriate color.
